In 2002, the Browns drafted an inside linebacker in the fifth round hoping he'd one day become a contributor on the field - maybe as backup or special teams contributor. After all, that's all a lot of teams gun for that late in the draft.

That player turned out to be a lot more valuable than just your average Day Two pick. Now, Andra Davis is the face of the Browns defense.

This year, the Browns took another inside linebacker on Day Two, this time in the fourth round, 110th overall - 31 picks before Davis was selected four years earlier.

Like Davis, Leon Williams hails from one of the three Florida colleges known for piping out NFL talent (Williams attended Miami, while Davis went to Florida). Both players had size in their favor from the get-go. Davis came out of college at 6-1, 244 pounds. Williams is listed at 6-2, 238.

Now, the Browns hope Williams can one day follow in Davis' path and go from second-day pick to top-notch starter.

Williams acknowledges that Davis isn't a half bad example to follow as he ventures into his NFL career.

"He knows what everybody is doing," Williams said of the fifth-year linebacker. "He's very comfortable out there. He's pointing things out and helping everybody out at the same time. He's definitely a leader out there along with Willie (McGinest) and the other guys.

He is going to be great someday. If it wasn't for the drama at Miami U, he would have been a beast and started. He will come around...eventually.

Re: Williams could be Day Two star

I hope so we never seem to find any of those hidden gems that can add some serious depth to your team.

Hopefully he and Babatunde can be the two for us.

We seem to blow more second rounders than find gems in the 5th, maybe that is changing

Butch Davis was good at finding gems in the second day.

Butch Davis was good at scowling...not much more.

We seem to love drafting WRs in the second round and third round, we all know how that has worked out for us.

spectacular, quincy morgran,KJ,andre davis(who had so much potential and still does but is always hurt) and many more!!!They all just had the weaknesses that one didnt have, which is why it made it such a spectacular WR corp!!!

I went to training camp yesterday and he looked REAL good. He had one play where he read a screen and popped the runningback as he was catching the ball that got some OOHs from the croud.
