MIAMI BEACH, Fla. -- Washington Wizards guard Gilbert Arenas and forward Awvee Storey have been arrested on charges of disobeying police.

Storey was blocking traffic in the middle of a busy street when an officer told him to get back to the sidewalk Saturday night, according to police reports. Storey didn't get out of the street, and the officer arrested him and charged him with failure to obey a command.

While police were arresting Storey, Arenas got out of a vehicle and walked toward the arresting officers. According to reports, an officer told Arenas to get back in his vehicle, but he refused, saying he wanted to stand next to his teammate. The officer took Arenas into custody and charged him with resisting without violence.

As Arenas was being arrested, according to reports, he said, "You can't arrest me. I'm a basketball player. I play for the Washington Wizards, and I'm not going to leave my teammate."

I didn't know you couldn't arrest basketball players

See, if LBJ was there, just like at the freethrow line, LeBron could have pre-warned him and said something along the lines of: "Gil, if you don't get back into the car, your'e going to jail" :chuckles:

LeBron is perfecting his game right now in a temple far far away and can't be disturbed..

I thought the reason they arrested Arenas was pretty lame. Miami police probably looking to cash in on Memorial Day Weekend.

Same thing happened to Santonio Holmes on friday night.

I got arrested last week and told the cop he couldn't because I'm a highschool student.

yea, from what i have heard...miami police made 500+ arrests down on south beach over the weekend. shit happens.

Washington Wizards guard Gilbert Arenas denied making comments attributed to him in a police report detailing his arrest on Saturday night in Miami Beach. Arenas and Awvee Storey, who played with the Wizards last season, were arrested and charged with disobeying police after they got out of a vehicle on a street packed with people during an event known as Urban Beach Week.

As Arenas was arrested, according to the police report, he said: "You can't arrest me. I'm a basketball player. I play for the Washington Wizards and I'm not going to leave my teammate."

Arenas said he never made such a statement.

"All I did was get out of the car to ask where they were taking Awvee so I could come get him out, and some officer comes up from behind and cuffs me," Arenas said in a phone interview.

"Everyone knows me. They know I don't have a cocky personality. I don't use my name to get in trouble and I don't use my name to get out of trouble. That would never come out of my mouth."

Arenas said he and Storey were riding in a limousine in heavy traffic when Storey got out of the vehicle after recognizing a former teammate. According to the police report, Storey was asked by an officer to get back onto the sidewalk. When Storey did not leave the street, the officer arrested him.

Arenas and Storey were processed and released after paying a fine. A total of 557 people, including Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Santonio Holmes, were arrested between Thursday morning and Saturday night on Miami Beach during an annual event that attracts several thousand people. This year, police beefed up their presence during the event.

Arenas called Jerry Colangelo, managing director of USA Basketball, on Sunday to explain what happened. Arenas will be one of 23 players trying out for the men's national team beginning July 19 in Las Vegas, and Colangelo has emphasized character in his selections. "I just wanted him to know that this wasn't a situation where I was out of control, disrespecting police," Arenas said. "That's not how I am."

doesnt surprise me at all.

After reading that article, this whole situation is really starting to stink. Smells like Miami police greed for money to me.....

***As Arenas was arrested, according to the police report, he said: "You can't arrest me. I'm a basketball player. I play for the Washington Wizards and I'm not going to leave my teammate."***

Seriously, does this sound like a real comment? Sounds like police tampering to me. It just doesnt seem like a likely thing Arenas would say, or any person.

***Arenas said he never made such a statement.

"All I did was get out of the car to ask where they were taking Awvee so I could come get him out, and some officer comes up from behind and cuffs me," Arenas said in a phone interview.***

Im guessin the officer recognized Gilbert, which led to the quick arrest. Cha-Ching$$$ From what I have seen, Arenas seems like a good guy.

This is really starting to stink. I really dont know what happened, but Im in Gilbert's corner, and may righteousness prevail.....

well, i mean, im sure cops were mad to begin with, memorial day weekend is "urban beach week" which basically translates into "big deal rappers on miami beach" but it doesnt sound like something arenas would say, at all. and also...how the hell do you arrest damn near 600 people over a 3 day weekend??? thats crazyyy.

I read this from the Allhiphop.com website today:

Gilbert Arenas denied what the police said he said upon his Memorial Day weekend arrest. They say he said, “You can't arrest me. I'm a basketball player. I play for the Washington Wizards and I'm not going to leave my teammate." Well, I believe him! Who would be that corny to say it like that?

Now, I definitely agree with how Gilbert handled his business in staying with his teammate Awvee Storey. I even have dudes I know that stayed with him when Gil was in a Miami jail. Speak to ‘em Jay from the BX: “I saw NBA all-star Gilbert Arenas coming into the county jail also. He told me the cops were arresting a buddy of his. He said was treated well by the correction officers and got out of the jail pretty fast, but he was shipped in the prison van like a can of sardines like rest of us common folk and put in a cell too.”

i check that site at least 10 times a day.
