Yao Ming to Retire

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Sad to see. He's a good guy, great for the league and their globalization and when he was healthy he was always worthy of an All-Star selection.

Man...this is sad. I remember the first time I saw Yao play. He was one of the few international players that didn't have the "soft" label. He's got legs like redwoods. It's unfortunate he was never really able to reach his full potential will all the injuries. I don't know if there's anyone outside of Dwight Howard that would have been able to guard him today if he were healthy. Hopefully he can continue to be a spokesman for international basketball and help grow the game in China. If the NBA was smart, they'd be placing a call immediately to talk to Yao about being in international marketing for the NBA.

This is disappointing because before he got injured I really felt that Yao was becoming the best center in the league even if he wasn't the most dominant player in the post. I feel that the quality of centers has gone done greatly over the last decade (which is probably why Shaq was able to keep getting work late into his 30's) especially when an undeveloped Dwight Howard is the best center mainly because of his raw athletic talent. I wanted Yao to come back and play because I know the Lakers would have lost against the Rockets if he was healthy. It's just a shame that we got to see some flashes of brilliance or potential and now it's over after a couple of years. I actually feel bad for him because I feel that he had the pressure of representing his country and rushed back from injury which ultimately led to his downfall.

One of the best scoring post players of all-time when he healthy. He was literally un-guardable one on one...

I'll never forget his contribution to the Meme world...

Reminds me of when Z gave serious consideration to retirement rather than face one more surgery, though Z was a younger man than Yao is now, and weighed less, and consequently the recovery must have been a little easier for Z. I feel bad for Yao because he was improving every year. But he certainly made his mark on the game and will be remembered.

I heard JVG talking about how he should make it in the HOF. He talked about how D Howard averaged like 12pts and 8reb against him and Yao was 8-2 against him or something. I really don't think he played enough to do so. Thoughts?

I think it was nice of Yao to retire. Some GM was probably going to over pay him just on the off chance he could get healthy.

It'll be interesting to see if anyone tries to outbid Portland for Oden... *sigh*
