The international market and international prospects are an area we should also pay attention to. I have a feeling this is where the Cavs might end up going to find a young C to bring in. Picking late 1st round it's usually rare to be able to get an American college C who's capable of developing into a starter. International players can be found in that area of the draft.
Unfortunately it's tough for us to get a great read on these players since we can only go by scouting reports and video clips.
I think this is changing. With the maturation of the int'l game and scouting, coupled with the improving pay in Europe, it's tough to get some hidden gem late in the first round who will actually want to come over to the US for the money being offered at their draft slot.
Tough break for Kaun: Center Sasha Kaun, who the Cavs drafted in the second round in 2008, has had a bit of a rough summer dealing with some back problems. After a promising rookie season with CSKA Moscow, one of the top teams in Europe, the former Kansas star was set to be a part of the Russian National Team in the European Championships in Poland this month. But Kaun started feeling some pain and Alexander Chernykh, an excellent Russian basketball journalist, tells us that Kaun has been diagnosed with a herniated disc. Right now doctors are advising him to rest and so he was unable to play for Russia in Poland. Kaun is still under contract for two more years in Moscow, but there is a chance he could examine coming to the Cavs next year because of an out clause in his contract.
