TJ's inane "pecking order" thread got me thinking -- about a cool and quirky soccer Web site, that is. It's called the Unofficial Football World Championships http://ufwc.blogspot.com/ and basically looks at the title as if it was boxing. They went back to the beginnings of history and calculated from the very first official game. From there on, you have to beat the champ to be the champ, simple as that. By their count, the current defender is Greece -- while the official FIFA World Cup was won by Italy last year.
So, based on that, i was wondering where the current NBA title belt should be. There was no way i was gonna go back through the beginning of basketball history, i'll leave that to someone who gets paid to do stuff like that or is in college. :chuckles:
For now, i figured that i'd start with the Spurs, as the undisputed champs at the end of October. Here's how it played out:
San Antonio 106 – 97 Portland
the first challenger didn't offer much of a challenge at all.
San Antonio 104 – 101 Memphis
this was a close one, the Grizz could really smell the scent of winning it all.
San Antonio 96 – 80 Sacramento
a true champion, dismissing unworthy applicants with ease.
but
Houston 89 – 81 San Antonio
a formidable foe appeared and took the crown decisively. who knows when the Spurs will next get a shot?
Houston 104 - 88 Milwaukee
the first attempt by the Bucks proved to be feeble
Houston 85 – 82 Charlotte
the champ hangs on, only just
Memphis 105 – 99 Houston
a shocker. i guess second time was the charm for this underdog.
Milwaukee 102 – 99 Memphis
and this one too.
Milwaukee 105 – 96 Atlanta
easy one, getting into elite form. efficiently.
Milwaukee 111 – 107 Cleveland
oh, this one hurts. second best again.
Milwaukee 110 – 103 LA Lakers
another one of the league's top players leads his troops - and fails again. Is anyone going to stop this jaggernaut?
who knows where the title will go next? to be sure, the next challenger will be Dallas. Should be quite a test for the champs. Keep an eye on this one, folks.
