LaPorta is off the 40-man now so I'd imagine his days in Cleveland are done.

Canzler is...not a big league starter.

The answer would have to come through a low level free agent or a guy like Tim Fedroff actually not being a fluke (unlikely).

What this team really needs is pitching, even if Ubaldo and Masterson are better. It wouldn't be enough.

Youklis and Swisher aren't going to turn around the second half's worst team in baseball. Though I commend the Indians for trying.

What would they do for the first half's team?

That was pretty unsustainable. Terrible run differential, was bound to catch up with them in a 162 game schedule. So in the end, again not much.

Baltimore had a negative run differential most of the year, worked out OK.

My guess would be that it had less to do with run differential and more to do with pitching.

I wish they'd take this proposed Swisher contract and offer it to Adam LaRoche.

@terrypluto: I checked on the report of the 2-year, $18M Tribe offer to Youk. It could be a little higher than $18M for 2.

Somewhere between $38-44 million over three years.

LaRoche is supposedly having a tough time with people going three years.

Even IF the Tribe signed Swisher and Youklis, I would still trade Asdrubal. We have depth at SS, and no matter how good our lineup is, our starting pitching is not good enough to compete. We have to trade Asdrubal because he's the only piece that can get us decent starting pitching.

As for Hafner, it's unlikely the Indians will re-sign him if only because I think they want flexibility at the DH position. Besides, with Swisher he would probably make half his at bats at DH anyway.

Jim Bowden now claiming Swisher demand is up to four years and upwards of 60 million.

I just can't stress enough how bad of a deal that would be.

Swish an an incredibly professional player, he's got a great eye at the plate and will go out and bust his ass for you 150 games a year or more.

But at 32, leaving the friendly confines of Yankee Stadium and being elevated to a middle of the lineup hitter...is a bad combination.

There is just no way he's worth that price.

If he's really asking for 60 mil we're better off spending our cash somewhere else IMO.

Agreed, I think for that money Adam LaRoche would provide on a two year deal (with a third year vesting option) it's a better option.

The Indians simply can't tie themselves up long term in mid-level players on high dollar deals.
