I just don't get the logic in choosing someone like Canzler or McGuinnis or McDade over Hafner.

You can have Hafner and still use the DH rotationally, as they would if any of those guys were in there.

Furthermore, with the new MLB schedule he doesn't get taken out of action for two weeks during interleague play. Instead it would be for one series at a time.

Hafner, with a .340+ OBP and .780+ OPS is worth the $1-3 million over a guy like the three above who cant produce those numbers in the minors.
Manziel's reps also insist it's a hoax -- and he's never made a penis video on "It's a Small World" or any other Disney ride.

Of course there's also his .228 batting average last season. The only good thing about Hafner at this point is his OBP - the fact that he can take a walk and work a count. But we don't know how an older Hafner would react to playing part time all the time. Besides, he remains injury prone, and I don't care how you slice it, he can't and won't play the field. Not worth it IMO. Time to move on and give opportunity to others.

To this point, there are no others.

With Canzler off the roster, I would agree with you. Perhaps they can still add someone before ST. I sure hope so.

Yeah, I doubt it's something that would end up happening, but the Indians were a team mentioned so I figured it was worth posting. If the team really was serious about trying to compete sooner rather than later, a trade for Morse wouldn't hurt.

Okay right now DH Is best handled by random position players to give them a rest. We have SS, Aviles and A. Cab. 1B Reynolds and Santana/Laporta. C, Carlos Santana and Marson/Gomes. Also you have to have LaPorta on this team this year and hope for the best. He can handle DH, OF, and 1B when needed so I say call it a season and go with rotations... Remember Francona Is our Manager. A World Series Manager I am sure can handle the lineup situation.

LaPorta is no longer on the 40 man roster. He'll probably be in AAA, but would be a long shot to be called up. Basically, he blew his several shots with the Indians and they have him for minor league depth only at this point.

If the Indians are in contention maybe they could add a bat at the trade deadline. I would rather have an extra 2 million that we could add in salary for a potential trade than Hafner's crippled ass.

I like the idea of Hafner coming in to DH this season - but one perk of having an open DH position is that you can integrate some of the kids into MLB. Seems like a good way to get Fedroff / Phelps some regular at bats, rather than calling them up and playing them once a week.

(I realize Phelps / Fedroff are hardly a reason to not sign Hafner - but I think of Phelps the way most Indians fans think of Canzler, so I'd love to see him get a chance.)

Latimore will probably go to Double-A, his third straight season there.

Not much in term of plate discipline, which is the main reason he's going to be held back and may never get to the big leagues.

But if he improves that, he's got the power and athleticism to play at the big league level. Entering his age 24 season he's certainly not a lost cause. Will be interesting to see him in this system which values pitch recognition and discipline at such a high level. I like when they take chances on guys like this with obvious physical tools, I trust them to fix them more than I trust them to take guys with less tools just to get by.

2K just announced they're going to release another abortion this year.

Only reason I play it is because its the only MLB game for Xbox.

And for the Franchise mode, actually pretty addicting.

More info on the Gomez thing

Pirates acquire pitcher Gomez from Indians

    PITTSBURGH (AP) --

The Pittsburgh Pirates have acquired right-handed pitcher Jeanmar Gomez from the Cleveland Indians in exchange for minor league outfielder Quincy Latimore.

The 24-year-old Gomez is 14-16 with a 5.18 ERA in 42 major league appearances, including 38 starts. Gomez went 5-8 with a 5.96 ERA in 2012 with Cleveland. Gomez made his major league debut with the Indians in 2010, when he allowed two runs or fewer in eight of his 11 starts.

Gomez was placed on the 40-man roster and will have a chance to compete for a spot in the starting rotation. The Pirates have at least one job up for grabs behind A.J. Burnett, Wandy Rodriguez and James McDonald. Pittsburgh reached an agreement with free agent left-handed pitcher Francisco Liriano in December but Liriano has not yet signed.

Gomez will join a group that includes Jeff Locke and Kyle McPherson in competition for the fifth-starting spot.

Latimore hit .252 with 15 home runs and 71 RBIs in 126 games at Double-A Altoona last year. The 23-year-old was taken by the Pirates in the fourth round of the 2007 draft.
