Re: New Star Wars Coming
certainly they could have done a better job at casting with the Christensen pick and a tweak here or there, but it's still curious how strongly some feel that Star Wars would be better without Lucas when there would be no star wars at all without Lucas. Many of the complaints are nitpicking over movies that are wildly popular.
I personally had hoped Lucas would decide to finish the stories and then have someone else do a full reboot.

Re: New Star Wars Coming
Notice how the most popular of the Star Wars films was directed by somebody else? Lucas is obviously critical to the series, he conceptualized and wrote the whole thing. I love the old trilogy, I just think he lost his way when he made the new ones. He became more concerned with merchandizing and making money. He's always been one to push the boundaries of technology for his films, and it was incredible with the first trilogy. Problem is he became too reliant on CGI with the new trilogy and it made the films lose a lot of their realism (I don't mean literal realism, I mean visually).
The problems with the new trilogy don't seem like nitpicking to me. The plots weren't that bad but the dialogue was very poorly written. Natalie Portman is usually a very good actress, in the Stars Wars films she came off looking like a Spanish soap opera star. Casting Christensen as Darth Freaking Vader was a HUGE mistake.Last edited by Doc Shakalou; 11-01-2012 at 05:06 PM.

Re: New Star Wars Coming
Actually, the most popular star wars by a mile was the original, and phantom menace was neck and neck with Jedi for inflation adjusted box office

And I completely agree with Christensen, easily the worst casting of all 6 movies, which overall did quite well with casting. That was a huge role to get so wrong (and is probably the main reason the box office dropped for those two movies).Last edited by KI4MVP; 11-01-2012 at 05:17 PM.

Re: New Star Wars Coming
There's more to it than just box office numbers. The first one had a ton of people seeing it over and over and over again just because they were mind fucked with what they were seeing. The Phantom Menace is quite possibly the least popular of all the movies, it had huge box office numbers because old fans and new fans alike came together to see the first Star Wars movie in 30 years. I mean, looking at box office numbers you could say the second Transformers film was insanely popular. It wasn't, lots of people turned up because they liked the first.
I know this isn't the most accurate method, but it's a survey I found where they polled to see which was the most popular of the movies. It pretty much lines up with what I thought. Empire is the most popular movie among fans.

Re: New Star Wars Coming
Sorry, gotta agree with Doc here. Empire Strikes Back was the best of the originals. Even though A New Hope was great in general. The original movies were quite horrible and its completely Lucas's fault. There is just so many plot holes and stupid ideas that he had in order to shake up the saga that ended up backfiring. The original 3 were just so brilliant.

Re: New Star Wars Coming
I don't actually think that is true... A lot of Star Wars A New Hope happened along the way as they dealt with major production issues. I don't think he had it in advance other than maybe a vague idea because they don't line up all that well for being thought out for 25 years.

Re: New Star Wars Coming
As long as Lucas has creative rights and final say, the new movies will be better than the prequels.

Re: New Star Wars Coming
George Lucas will be 69 this coming May. Just wait til he's gone and the reboot treatment makes the series unrecognizable.

Re: New Star Wars Coming
I don't know how many people are familiar with a lot of Star Wars books, but I think they are taking the next 3 movies in completely the wrong direction if they go past episode 6. The story lines covered about thousands of years before Anakin Skywalker (Darth Bane, Sith/Jedi wars, etc.) in some books and video games have fundamentally different themes within the same backdrop. Would have been far more interesting to delve into those. But I guess if Disney has the rights long term, things like this will always be possible.

As long as Shia Leboof isn't anywhere near these new movies I'm stoked.
