Truth And Rumors (trade deadline talk)

Because most of our opponents have spent so much this past off-season, I think it's not so bad being a buyer. But don't completely be set on a core player coming here. We may just trade for more draft picks and small assets. Here's what we got that may appeal to any team:

Andy: If he can play at the deadline, he's worth at least 1 first rounder, 1 asset; don't have unreasonable expectations for what we get from him
Boobie: He's still young and lots of contenders like someone who can shoot in the clutch; I'm sure he's worth a 1st or 2nd rounder
Walton, Miles: There contracts are what make them so enticing, so we may pick up ANYTHING for them regardless
Cap Space: We can absorb assets other teams don't want, because they may be over the tax limit; there is no time limit to when we use it as long as we're smart
Draft Picks: We can use those to pick up much better things as we can add more to any deal

Thompson, Gee; if we're desperate to get a star back, we can probably give up one if we had to, that's up to Grant though

So there's plenty of things we can do, and you almost expect us to make at least one deal at the deadline, we've done so the last 3 years

Unless the guy is 26 or younger, not interested in picking up a star yet, he'll be worth a lot of assets; if we just pile on picks, we should possibly get 2 core pieces to add to Gee, Dion, Irving, Thompson, and Zeller

But right now, we're not even 10% there, I'd like to see what this core of players can fully do before we get to the trade deadline

I've always thought that Josh Smith is a guy who could REALLY benefit from playing with a top tier point guard. He would actually be a pretty nice fit at the 3 when Kyrie and Dion are one the court, and would improve our depth at the 4. Not sure if now is the right time to grab a player such as Smith, but it's intriguing. As much as I love the way the Cavs are doing the rebuild right and taking it slow, I do look forward to when we can actually start to look at adding impact players.

Depth is very important and our depth is absolutely horrendous. Actually it's non existant.

Smith gives us depth at both the 3 and 4

Josh Smith would be the starter. Thompson would be the depth. Do you really think Thompson is currently a better player than Josh Smith, or are you trying to put words in my mouth?

I'd go after Rudy Gay, who is signed through 2015. Plenty of bigs in next year's draft.

Personally unless the right player is available at the trade deadline I would stand pat and let everything play out. There are only a few players I would consider trading are assets for at this point in our rebuilding stage and I don't think they will become available this year.

What interests me the most is maintaining our cap space heading into the summer along with getting another top 10 pick in the draft. In that situation there would be so many avenues for us to explore.

We are not going to make a move towards contention unless we are in contention, so I think we can rule out Smith. Also considering our frontcourt of Tristan, Andy, and Zeller, Smith would be a terrible fit at the 3, and would take away from Tristan's development at the 4 if we played him there. I would also be heavily against giving up a lot of assets for a player that will be a free agent soon... The worst of our picks this year, and Walton sure, but much more than that and it's foolish.

Also given Grant's MO has been to collect assets so far, and we are only in the second year of a major rebuild I think we will see that continue.

Maybe it's time to trade a bulk of assets for a single asset. For example multiple picks for a single one, but I don't think we should expect Grant to do anything to make this team better this season.

I think it would be great if we traded the Lakers pick, some seconds, and the future Miami pick/Kings pick for a lotto pick this year personally. Not an incredibly deep draft, but if we miss out on Noels/Adams/Zeller, than there are some potentially good C's available later in the lotto too. Like Gobert for example if he falls a bit.

I agree about Smith and Millsap, but I would rate Nene over Jefferson because of his D.

I doubt Sacramento will let DMC go, but who knows?
Everything about the Kings/Maloofs is one big question-mark at the moment.

I'd imagine Sacto will trade Tyreke before they trade DMC. If I were them I would prioritize DMC over tyreke. Though the idea of kyrie and DMC playing together for the Cavs is mouth-watering.

Considering how awful our bench is, we need some kind of sixth man, scorer to come off of the bench.

I'm interested in Wesley Matthews from Portland. I don't know how feasible it would be, or if he's even available. I think he's the sort of player who could come in and be a huge boost.

Some chatter on this Board of picking up Josh Smith, which would result in TT getting more of his minutes out of the 5 hole. Smith is a career 65 percent FT shooter, and TT shoots the freebies at an even lower rate. Scary.

lmao some people crack me up. Josh Smith? Al Jefferson? These are moves terrible teams make and get them stuck in mediocrity for about half a decade.

^ One would argue that with a potential top pick in the draft, Jefferson, and a veteran PG like Billups, that all the sudden we are a top team in the East again.

I say we can contend with anyone in the East there. This is not the Atlanta Hawks of the last few years, it's a team that can make a serious run.

I don't understand why people think it's going to be 2017 until we are competing again. The way we are set-up, we could potentially swing a 30 win improvement from this season to next. Tons of cap room, flexibility, assets, etc.

And the little piddly tank "injuries" we have seen with Varejao/Irving all the sudden go away when we are competing. That can't be under-estimated.
