Re: Bernie Kosar drunk on the radio
I was watching that ESPN 30 for 30 series "Broke" that talks about athletes that lost their money. Bernie was on there talking a little bit, but what I noticed was that he was completely drenched in sweat, no on else was.
Also, one of the athletes made a good point. After getting painkiller shots and/or pills before, during, and after games, people wonder why athletes end up addicted to pain killers, drugs, and alcohol.
Just something I didn't connect until then.

Re: Bernie Kosar drunk on the radio
My heart goes out to Bernie, and here's to hoping for a full recovery for him. Having said that, if Hooley would have directly transitioned into hawking for Joebee's after BK's call, it would have been transcendent radio.

Re: Bernie Kosar drunk on the radio
Really? They're going to insult our intelligence by acting like this guy wasn't shitfaced off his ass?
I'll give him this: if there is anyone who can sound drunk as fuck while still being sober, it's Bernie. But...he was drunk.

Re: Bernie Kosar drunk on the radio
Bernie truly does speak normally with a slur that makes you think that he is drunk. He is also overly emotional. So, I can buy that it may not have been quite as bad as it seemed. He's typically very clear of thought though. In that interview, he was most definitely not. I really have no problem with Rizzo speaking almost on his behalf though. The message from that was really that Bernie was fine, and he's not going to gossip about it. I'm okay with that.

Re: Bernie Kosar drunk on the radio
I don't get why KNR brings him on as a guest. It's very clear he has a drinking problem - you don't go on the radio trashed unless you do. They are doing him a bit of disservice to allow him on the radio - though obviously all responsibility lies with Kosar. That was awful, either way.

Re: Bernie Kosar drunk on the radio
Just listened to the Rizzo segment. Basically it was 10 minutes of him saying Bernie is fine don't worry about him.
That said, Rizzo did sound very convincing. I dunno. I'm not sure what to believe. All I know is that guy sounded lit the fuck up, way more so than usual.

Re: Bernie Kosar drunk on the radio
As some others have said, Bernie has numerous factors working against him here, alcohol being just one of them. It's sad, really. Bernie is a large part of some of my greatest CLE sports memories. He's a truely genuine guy with a big heart, but he does have problems. He's incredibly intelligent, but I have little doubt head trauma from football has affected him. He's also probably still on pain meds of some sort I would imagine. Really not an ideal situation for a guy with a pretty well documented history of drinking problems. Couple that with all of his emotional distress associated with his family life and I feel pretty bad for the guy. He's fallen pretty far. Hopefully not so far that he can't come back.

Re: Bernie Kosar drunk on the radio
So do we have documented proof that Kosar has drinking problems or has had them? Rizzo denies all of that entirely and claims to be very close to the situation.

If any of you have time, check this article out. It is about two former University of Akron football players. Players becoming addicted to pain meds is a very real, and serious problem.

Re: Bernie Kosar drunk on the radio
Bernie had an oxy addiction. Oxy amplifies alcohol 10 fold, so if he has been abusing pain-killers again, a few drinks could make him sound as drunk as he did on the radio. Maybe he was just plastered, but that wouldn't be my guess.
The oxy addiction is also the reason he speaks with a slur. Even after he cleaned himself up, the damage had been done which is a frequent symptom of drug use. When Bernie does preseason Browns games, he always sounds drunk as well too...just an unfortunate side-effect of the years of abuse.
The most disappointing thing about all of this to me is what could have been....Bernie has a brilliant football mind, is super passionate about the game of football (There is not a bigger Browns/Hurricane) fan in the world. He would have made a fantastic GM (think John Elway) but it's no secret amongst NFL GM's/owners how many demons he has. I wish nothing but the best for Bernie, but it's sad to see him fall off the wagon. It sickens me to watch local sports DJ's lie about his issues and cover-up the obvious. It doesn't do Bernie any good and insults the intelligence of their fan base.
