I'm becoming happier & happier that the Browns passed.Adam Schefter@AdamSchefter
Eagles made Kelly one of 10 highest paid NFL coaches, giving him a 5-yr deal worth right around $32.5 million, an average of $6.5m per year.

That's almost as bad as hiring Lombardi to make personnel decisions :o

Re: Chip Kelly to the Eagles
I'm not even saying anything. On the outside, it looks like blasphemy. I don't want to look back and say it would fail for sure if Pat learns how to incorporate an up-tempo offense into his scheme.
I will say, though, that the Fritz Shurmur's nephew thing seems to be giving Pat ample chances to get it right.

Re: Chip Kelly to the Eagles
The whole Shurmur thing doesn't make any sense except he's not the type to headbutt with a rookie HC and he's the highest profile guy that would accept without needing playcalling duties. Other than that, looking like Chip Kelly is in over his head with respect to filling out a coaching staff. This is something mentioned that could be an issue with hiring Kelly a couple weeks ago. Just a strange hire. They're so completely different maybe they rub off on each other and Pat learns something, Kelly can run that team into the ground for all I care though.

Re: Chip Kelly to the Eagles
Chip Kelly was 'too big a gamble,' Browns' Joe Banner tells SI
By Mary Kay Cabot
Hiring Oregon's Chip Kelly was too much of a gamble for the Browns, CEO Joe Banner told Sports Illustrated's Peter King.
"We removed ourselves from the process," Banner said. "We really liked Chip. He's intriguing, a very different thinker, and very smart. But you could see he was uncertain what he wanted to do. He may be in Philadelphia 10 years or longer and have a terrific career. But the fact he committed to Tampa Bay last year, backed out, then seemed all year to be leaning toward going to the NFL, then being so uncertain with us, we just felt it was too big a gamble. If there was no ambivalence, we may have offered him the job.''
The Browns interviewed Kelly for seven hours in Arizona on Jan. 4 and were reportedly close to a deal at one point. But Banner and owner Jimmy Haslam left Arizona two days later, with sources close to the situation saying they walked away because they feared Kelly's heart wasn't 100% into leaving Oregon.
Later that night it was announced that he was staying at the university. But the Eagles, who interviewed Kelly for nine hours in Arizona a day after the Browns did, landed Kelly last week. Both Eagles owner Jeff Lurie and Kelly said his decision came down to Oregon and the Eagles.

Re: Chip Kelly to the Eagles
It is interesting that Kelly can't find a true superstar staff to work with him in Philly.

Re: Chip Kelly to the Eagles
"He likes to set up the pass with the run, but HE likes to set up the run with the pass! He likes to go for it on fourth downs in the red zone and HE likes to go for it only on hopeless fourth downs... it's... THE ODD COUPLE!"
Seriously, if Shurmur is the kind of offensive mind with which Kelly wants to be associated... I'm glad he's in Philly and not in Cleveland.

Re: Chip Kelly to the Eagles
So, where are all the posters chastising the FO for not getting their man because he chose OU first, and then PHI later, over us? Seems to me the ball was in our court and we were the ones who said not thanks to Kelly. I'm not sold on Banner yet, but with Kelly going back n forth, hiring Shurmur, etc. it is beginning to look like we may have been the fortunate ones here.
I will be watching the whole PHI thing very closely these next couple years. Seems to have the makings of a complete self-implosion that we have become accustomed to in CLE. If any city can see one coming, it would be us.

Billy Davis will be the Eagles' new DC, per source

Billy Davis was our LB coach... thoughts? Gotta be honest, don't think I've ever heard anything about him from his time with the Browns.
