Re: Friend showing STRONG signs of paranoid schizophrenia and/or paranoid psychosis.
Dude, in all seriousness, schizo can be incredibly and suddenly volatile. You need to proceed with extreme caution. They can become incredibly violent when they feel the least bit provoked and have been known to turn on the people closest to them. There are many, many accounts out there just over the last decade or so about schizo's turning on their family/friends and committing murder. The reasons usually fall under the general "God made me do it" or the "voices in my head" to the "aliens forced me to" reasoning.
I have an uncle who is paranoid schizo, but he's been medicated my entire life, so I've never seen him act out in harmful ways. But, my Mom and Grandma have told me some pretty disturbing stories about him before he was diagnosed. Came out of nowhere, just like your story, in his early 20's I believe.

Re: Friend showing STRONG signs of paranoid schizophrenia and/or paranoid psychosis.
First, you need to see if this dude is on drugs. He may not be, but someone needs to make sure.
As far as getting him help, I'm currently trying to figure this out as well for someone I know. She has shut everyone out who tells her what she doesn't want to hear and although it isn't about her imagining things, it is about her thinking the world is focused on making her life hell. Not sure if she's just crazy or if she's going off the deep end, but it is scary and stressful.
Hang in there.

Re: Friend showing STRONG signs of paranoid schizophrenia and/or paranoid psychosis.
They missed the fact that this man also emptied out a vacuum cleaner and ate its contents. Also, this man needed a friend like you to try to get him help.MIAMI (CBSMiami) – A southwest Florida man was arrested after he reportedly jumped off the roof of a couple’s North Ft. Myers home, knocked one person over and then went on a rampage inside the residence.
Oh, he was naked at the time.
The homeowners told Lee County sheriff’s deputies that just before 7 p.m. they heard noises on the roof and went outside to see what was going on. That’s when they spotted a nude Gregory Bruni, 21, from Venice on the roof, according to the News-Press.
Bruni jumped off the roof and knocked over one of the victims. He then reportedly ran inside the house and tore a 72 inch flat screen TV off a living room wall.
As the man yelled to his wife to get his gun, Bruni continued to trash the house. The sheriff’s office said the man’s wife managed to fire three shots at Bruni, but missed.
As the man went to get another gun, Bruni allegedly fell to the floor in the living room and started masturbating. He then ran into the couple’s son’s room and rubbed the boy’s clothing over his face.
When deputies arrived, the sheriff’s office said Bruni fell to the ground, flailed around and spoke – but was not making any sense.
Bruni tried to get away from the deputies several times. In the end, they had to use a Taser on him to take him into custody.
Investigators later discovered that Bruni defecated near the front door and in a hallway inside the residence.
Bruni was taken to Lee Memorial Hospital and put under observation while doctors tried to figure out what he was on."All those years I was dreaming of other things, I was actually doing what I really wanted: hanging out with my family, drinking with my friends, making friends with my family and hanging out with my drinking."

Hey Celph, what if you go see a doctor? Be the one who relays whatever suspicions you have with your friend, tell em what you told us. I'm sure a specialist will be able to give you instructions on how to get started in helping your friend.

Re: Friend showing STRONG signs of paranoid schizophrenia and/or paranoid psychosis.
His family situation is fucked up to say the least. But that is something my friends and I are still trying to get, as they are the only ones with POA.
I am for sure.
You to, Thanks.
I was told by a mental illness crisis hotline that I can't do much as he is over 18. She seemed more concerned with me then him, guess because I was who she was talking to. I will try talking to other places as well.

Make sure he doesn't bring you down with him. If his family does nothing, you can only do so much in the long run without him wearing you down.

Re: Friend showing STRONG signs of paranoid schizophrenia and/or paranoid psychosis.
My great Uncle had this happen after his long time wife died. He snapped. We tried and to get him help, but in the end there wasnt much we could do for him but be understanding. Eventually he had to be put into a home until he died a few years later.
I hate to say it, but you are describing text book paranoia and your friend is in for a lifelong battle at best and there isnt much you can do for him being so far away.

Re: Friend showing STRONG signs of paranoid schizophrenia and/or paranoid psychosis.
The medication today for schizophrenia is pretty good. There isn't any natural cure, and it doesn't just go away. He's pretty scared. Once he can get past that, and go to a doctor he'll be fine.

Re: Friend showing STRONG signs of paranoid schizophrenia and/or paranoid psychosis.
Drugs isn't helping his cause. Anyways, wouldn't you think if his family has a history of schizophrenia...that they wouldn't neglect this situation? Something doesn't seem right...get your buddy some help as soon as you can! Think of this like an infection..catch it before it gets worse. This is serious shit. I am not saying he gets strapped up and gets put in a padded room...but have him seek help. Also, if you are a true friend...you have to take all the ILLEGAL shit away from him and dispose of it. Make sure he doesn't get anything else either, alright dude?

Re: Friend showing STRONG signs of paranoid schizophrenia and/or paranoid psychosis.
ALSO..make sure he isn't in a room that is dark...unless he's sleeping. He sitting in a room in full darkness can make things worse as well.
And the recording of the roof and showing your friend that no one is out to get him or on his roof will help ease his paranoia.

Re: Friend showing STRONG signs of paranoid schizophrenia and/or paranoid psychosis.
Iremember just goofing around on youtube a couple years ago and stumbled on this schizophrenia simulation video. I've always been fascinated with abnormal psychology and schizophrenia is one of the most fascinating of all. If that's what it's really like, I'm shocked that there's not an even HIGHER instance of suicide. If you watch that and don't feel absolutely awful for these people, I don't know what to tell you.
