Why do the two concepts have to be mutually exclusive? We could trade him and bring him back. It's not like his market worth is going to change, or he would consider giving us some percieved discount. So, you trade him for what you can and go after him in FA if you want him back, just as you would have tried to reup him if we didn't trade him. We have nothing like Bird rights to give us any kind of advantage over other teams. The only reasoning I can see is that people may think he isn't going to opt out...but does anyone really believe that?

THIS. Really no reason to keep him if a team will give us something decent for him. Unless retaining him gives you a lot of leverage in keeping him (His interest) , but that could turn it into a bidding war, which is not good for us. I love him, but I'm all aboard the trade Speights train.

Whats your question mark, and if you say Lebron....
It won't be out of no where. It will be because the team adds two more rookie players to the squad. One of which will hopefully be a top 5 pick again. Couple that with improvement on the 4 young players we have already drafted in the past two years. It will simply be the natural progression of improvement that is unavoidable unless you simply screwed up the drafting process.

Those 3 wins that are being scoffed at could be incredibly important to who we get to draft at the top of the round. This is our last chance at netting a possible top 5 with our own pick. Next year, and for the foreseeable future, we are going to be too good to be that high in the draft. You only have a one to three year window to grab potential game changers with top of the round picks.

If we really want Speights, we can always sign him as a free agent. No one is going to offer him a 5 year max contract. We'll have cap space. If Speights really wants to be here as much as he says, and we want him, then it'll get done. We'd have the pick and Speights. If he won't sign with us as a free agent, then he wouldn't have anyways. Either way, trading nets us a pick and likely a higher place in the draft with our own pick this year. Don't see a reason not to do this unless the player they want us to take back would cause cap issues. Otherwise, pretty much a no brainer.

    Tired of reading this.

Speights is adding a ton to the Tank. He is contributing more to losing than winning lately.

He is a big man shooting 43%. He plays half ass lazy D 90% of the time.

Sure he had a few hot games to start, but he is settling into being the player the Grizzlies had to pay us to take off their hands. Only reason his PER is decent is because he shoots a LOT. The more you shoot, as long as over about 30%, the higher your PER goes. Check out comparison with JJ Hickson-

Well if we sign a star player (LeBron?, etc) in 2012 then I don't think we will suck in 2014. I'm not going to hurt our 2014 flexibility to sign Speights. If we can get a 1st round pick for Speights without having to take back a bad contract, I'd do it in a heartbeat.

In my opinion, the Cavs should take what they can for Speights. He is a good player and he is young and he's got size; HOWEVER I see a lot of bonehead plays in him. If the Cavs were close, I'd think he was a good piece off the bench, but that isn't the case at this point. He has great value for a playoff team who is looking for some size. Problem is, whichever team gets Speights will be frustrated with him as much as they're lauding his contributions.

Under the new CBA, the bench guys like Speights are the likely candidates to see their contract numbers shrink from those that came before. Of course, that is more likely to be the case on a good team because those clubs will have the majority of their cap space on studs/all star caliber players. Speights certainly falls well outside that classification.

Teams seeking to have the cap space to go after legit franchise altering talent won't want to tie their hands with high priced bench talent, even if better than average ability.

The only way Speights gets an inflated contract is by a mediocre or bad club that is desperate to sniff the rear end of the playoffs and sell some extra tickets.

I'd move him for a #1 draft pick in 2013, but won't be mad if the Cavs ride it out with him until the summer. The rest of the season as an audition should give the decision makers plenty of fodder to judge if he can be a worthwhile piece.

Bottom line is that no one can really know what the market value of a player such as Speights will be under the new CBA.

What you say isn't true at all. He has caused us to win 3 more games than we would have without him, and there is no particular game that, if he were not on this team, we would have won it. His "2-3" games happened within the first several games he was here. Thank God it's the trade deadline on Thursday. I just hope that we can move him during that time.

Guys like Speights can be acquired every season.

There are plenty of young bigs, with less than complete games, who will look good in audition / increased minute scenarios.

His per 48 minute numbers are pretty much identical in Cleveland.

    Memphis: .429 FG%, 21.8 PPG, 15.5 REB, 20.5 FGA, 1.06 PPFGA
    Cleveland: .438 FG%, 28.36 PPG, 13.96 REB, 24.36 FGA, 1.16 PPFGA

So in Memphis he was rebounding at a higher per 48 rate and nearly all other numbers are a wash. His end stat line is a result of playing more minutes, not playing better or more efficiently. These are precisely the scenarios a good GM needs to take advantage of. Cleveland can sell high on a player who has no place in their long terms plans.

If Speights were 22 or 23, I would be more inclined to hang on to him. He'll be 26 in August and in his 6th year in the NBA. At this point, he is what he is. If a contender wants to give us a 1st round pick for him, I would be REALLY disappointed if we said no. The chances he resigns here are really low (for a multitude of reasons). Turn him in to a future asset and bank it for 2014. The Cavs need to maximize their trade ammo for when some of these stars become available.
