It is fine to be disappointed the Browns' top choices are turning them down. But look at most of the top choices... Chip Kelly? Nick Saban? Bill Cowher (usually)? Bob Stoops? Jon Gruden? Sure Gase and McDaniels sprinkled in, but most of the guys the Browns flirt with are as big as it gets.

The Lions struck out on Whiz, or Wiz, or whatever the fuck he likes being called. But who cares? It's Ken Whisenhunt. His name isn't to the caliber of the Browns' "top targets." Maybe the problem is the Browns' expectation level. If this whole process just involved Quinn, Gase, etc., and they ended up with Quinn, would the freakout be this ridiculous? Probably not.

The top targets for other teams were Mike Zimmer, Jim Caldwell, etc. The biggest get this off season was Bill O'Brien, and as a Penn State fan even I think he is a tad overrated. He struggled to control the defensive side of the football team and his playcalling/decision making was very questionable at times. Just because they come from college doesn't mean they're big names, either. Greg Schiano? Doug Marrone?

Chip Kelly is the only big name that truly denied the Browns and went elsewhere. Even that took a ton of leg work from the Eagles after Kelly had turned them down as well. If there is any issue, it is the fact that the Browns seem to be the only team, publicly, launching all their efforts at the TOP GUYS in the game. Maybe their expectations need to be a bit more realistic, like literally every other team in this year's coaching search.

The "big name" hires the last few years have been: Jim Harbaugh and Chip Kelly. Name me another coach who was "THE" guy to get for ANY team. I guess John Fox was a hot commodity? But his team took a steamy dump in their pants the year before. Andy Reid wasn't. Nor was Lovie Smith. Same with Jeff Fisher. Was Pete Carroll, an NFL retread, considered to be one? No, just shocking, really.

Big name hires, like the ones the Browns have gone after the last two years (and the Shurmur year), just don't happen that often. So why THAT blows people away is baffling to me.

I get being upset about Gase, but in the grand scheme of REALISTIC things, it isn't the end of the world. Noe if Quinn, Pettine (that how you spell it? Don't care), etc. turn the Browns down, well, then there is a huge issue. For now? Just going to watch.

Clearly the guys the Browns wanted most didn't feel the Browns opportunity was better than being coordinators with their current team, becoming a HC elsewhere or staying in the college ranks.

I can agree with this angle besides your more sarcastic posts. I feel that the roster, past records, location, and qb situation are not what scare away our top HC projects. It's the management, especially now. Why would Gase leave Denver where he runs the best offense in the league, with the best qb in the league, on his way to a Super Bowl, leave to join an organization where its own fans revile their GM and don't trust their President or the Owner that oversees both?

Gase can leave his job whenever he wants, most likely when Peyton retires, to any job he likes in the near future as long as he keeps up his offense at respectable levels.

My biggest question is, who the hell is making the draft picks? WE DON'T EVEN KNOW! So if you're a head coach, and during your interview with the Browns and you ask, "Do I get to pick my own quarterback, and other players I deem fit?" and the answer you get is along the lines of, "Well we run a committee approach to this, but you'll get to voice your opinions in the matter."

My reaction, fuck that. If I'm sticking my ass on the line for the Browns job and know if anything goes wrong that it's on me, I want to pick my own goddamn players to rely on. Not a retarded GM that talked shit on Gordon and was COMPLETELY wrong among his other mistakes. Lombardi is just one problem. Banner and his hunger for power over personnel when he is a cap guy, is another matter in itself.

If we don't respect/hate Lombardi who has a hand in the draft and personnel, what do you think the actual professionals in the league think about him, such as Gase or any other HC prospect?

Which is why firing Chud immediately like that was so shortsighted. The next guy they pick they are essentially stuck with because you can't go and fire another coach without permanent damage to the organizations reputation. Look at the fallout from this shitstorm. Could you imagine if they have to settle for a guy and he ends up even worse than Chud?

They are stuck in a hole they themselves dug.

Huge questions in the front office, of course, that must be vetted. You're just wrong, though, that another shitty record team is the answer to current head coach candidates over the Browns one. They all are shitty for a reason or two, each guy just has to debate what matters most. Ya, that's easier to do with multiple options.

Pretty sure three of the four teams had a 10+ touchdown guy at running back. Not sure if Gore got to 10 or not.
Manziel's reps also insist it's a hoax -- and he's never made a penis video on "It's a Small World" or any other Disney ride.

I don't know who the right guy is, if I did, I'd be working in an NFL front office somewhere and not posting on a message board.

More than anything, this whole process has just been deflating.

I had a really uneasy feeling when Chud was fired, which only grew more uneasy after seeing the press conference.

Now the coaching search....I mean, just as a fan, it is pretty depressing.

We're essentially waving our panties in the air and all the drunk guys stumbling out of the bar are saying no thanks.

Maybe they hire the right guy but more than anything, this years' issues just seemed more personnel related to me.

Fix those roster holes and any competent coach can get us to 8-9 wins IMO.

The biggest red flag, for me, was the way Banner and Co. framed the firing.

It didn't make any sense and watching this process play out just confirms they really had no plan when they axed Chud.

Again, maybe by some crazy stroke of luck they get it right...but my gut tells me our major issues merely revolved around roster deficiencies. Instead of acknowledging as much, they pushed Chud out the door with the thought "we can get anyone we want".

Now we're weeks in to the search and everyone of note has said no thanks. To me, it wreaks of getting caught with your pants down. I guess we'll see over the next 12 months.

Completely agree here, just saying that we never got the chance to sell him on the job.

    Holy hell, this is great.

"BITCH-KITTIES" itself just sold me on Pettine

That's been my problem with Gase from the start...

Why should the Browns have to sell Gase on the job? Gase should be selling the Browns on him..

Any time the power dynamic like that shifts, I get weary about what it means for both parties...

If we hire him....would he push us to take Clowney over a QB? Not sure how that would play out.
