Cavs sign Damon Jones

The Cavaliers and free-agent point guard Damon Jones agreed today to a
four-year deal worth $15 to $16 million, according to several league sources.
Jones, who played last season with the Miami Heat, was the last of the top free agent point guards left. The Cavs had been talking to him for several weeks while the Heat negotiated with free agent Michael Finley, who eventually signed with San Antonio.

The addition of Jones will help the Cavs' poor 3-point shooting. Jones was fifth in 3-point field-goal percentage last season at 43.2 percent.

Jones, 29, will battle Eric Snow for the starting point-guard position.

pair that with a decent bench, and a breakout season by someone, and a healthy side show bob, and no major injuries to any of our players, and we might possibly see the second round of the playoffs.

I'm happy about this, not overjoyed but happy. I like the three-point shooting and the good assist/turnover ratio, but I don't like what I understand to be his defensive shortcomings. What I'm happiest about is that we head into the season with Damon Jones and Eric Snow at the point rather than Eric Snow and Steve Blake or someone of his ilk. Now for that back-up center and a speedy recovery by Varejao.

This is great if true! Branson also said we had Sarunas when we didn't, is it on ESPN yet? I really wanna hear from Damon what took him so long to decide, and why he picked Cleveland, it really seemed he didnt want to play here.

Well, what a surprise! 4 years - 16 mil....he'll still be stroking 3s in that timeframe, as will Marshall, and James will be improved. Maybe a surprise with Luke or Sahsa. We will be VERY solid behind the arc - and Z will have a ton of space to operate.

I hope Damon brings a positive attitude. He better forget about Shaq and Miami. He should also assume the position under the basket when LeBron practices his dunks.

Nice work Danny - I wonder if there was a last minute sell to bring him over, or at least a deadline/ultamatim.

remind me who we were bidding against in the d.j. sweepstakes. 4 yr contract avg more than 4 mill per is pretty high.

as chicagocavfan said, z will have plenty of room to operate. he'll have all the room he wants for 48 minutes since we don't have a backup center.

i'm not a real fan of d.j., hopefully the last year of the contract has a buyout. he's mouthy on the court like mcinnes was.

if this is a bad group together marshall and d.jones will grow old together and lebron will be frustrated near the end of his contract.

The Cleveland Cavaliers have reached a contract agreement with free-agent point guard Damon Jones. It is a four-year deal worth $16 million, according to an NBA source. The deal has incentives that could push the value to near $20 million.

Jones has been on the Cavaliers' radar screen for months. The 3-point specialist averaged 11.6 points and 4.3 assists. Most importantly, he shot 43 percent from 3-point range, hitting 225 of them in all.

The Cavaliers had offered him a contract last month and waited weeks for a response. Jones had preferred to return to the Miami Heat and that looked like it would happen after the Heat failed to sign Michael Finley.

He will help bolster the team's woeful jump shooting as well as provide another ball handler.

Jones and Eric Snow will compete for the starting point guard job.
