since I figured probably 90% of our 6000 members are male (though probably not very many have reached puberty yet) I decided to take the plunge and start a male pattern baldness thread.
first, my name is bob2the2nd, and I am going to eventually go bald, most likely totally bald ![]() Im 26 and have been slowly losing my hair since right before i turned 24 (a little over 2 full years). The first signs were a little more hair on the tips of my fingers when washing my hair, or running my hands through my hair and seeing more than the average number of hairs. After 2 months, I was literally waking up in the morning to a pile a hair on my pillow. while still in the first year of hairloss, which is a great reaction time, one should really look to start treatment as soon as you start to show signs. Its said if you dont treat for a couple of years any hair loss becomes permanent. once it started falling out I read everything I could. There are many different types of hair loss ranging for genes to stress to DEHYDRATION. for those of you that dont know male pattern baldness comes from your MOTHER'S DAD. many people will ask if your father is bald and thats how you can tell if you will be bald too, thats not true. You need to look at your grandfather on your mother's side. Additionally there are very many different sorts of baldness. Some guys will go totally bald, others will go bald in the back of their head, others the very front, and other still up the corners in front. Also it all varies to different degrees. Some guys will lose everything in an area and others will just go thin. Once again look at your grandfather on your mom's side to get the best idea of what you will be facing. For those of you in the clear, congrats you dont have to worry about your hair. For those of you in trouble... keep reading. First I would read as much as you can about the subject, second GO SEE YOUR DOCTOR! what you will learn as while there are many different treatments some will work for you and others wont depending on your type of hair loss. It is highly recommend that a double treatment of rogaine (foam applied twice a day) and propecia (pill once a day) is the best course of treatment. For me though rogaine didnt help me at all. I tried it for 120 days and finally stopped and still have 2 bottles of it just sitting in my bathroom. What worked for me was propecia (i have since switched to the generic kind) and lots of WATER. It took me a while to figure out what was happening but I noticed that when I focused on cardio while working out (for 3-4 months at a time), while I would drink water I would lose a lot too because of working out. This lead to a constant loss of hair. I could run my hand through my hair and see the hairs just coming off. additionally I could brush against my scalp with my fingers and feel no new hair follicles growing But when I would switch to muscle gaining I would drink a TON of water and my hair would stop falling out and quickly start growing back. I can feel the little hairs on my scalp and after 2 months my hair looks much thinker than it did. Eventually I cut out the rogaine after forgetting to get another dose of propecia one time and for a month my hair just fell out. But once I got back on propecia the hair loss stopped. Im curious for those the rest of you on the board, if you have any good ideas or things that have worked for you? maybe in the only one on the board to experience this, but i doubt it. |

The answer is stop wearing baseball caps or any type of hat. Hats stop hair follicles from getting oxygen. That's why you go bald.

I got a different genetic issue from someone in may family. Too much body hair... It's everywhere.. I'd rather be bald, but that probably wouldn't be a good look for me. I'd look like Professor X from X-men.

The men in my family are all bald and so are a lot of relatives but there are a few that still have hair. I am one of them
but my brother tells me to start using Propetia. It's supposed to let you keep the hair that you have. I may start getting on it because i really dont want to live the rest of my life with an upside down fad. Lol.

Wow.. I got a haircut today because I thought it was getting a little long on the sides...Now I feel guilty...
I'm not going bald yet.. I do shed hair a lot, where hats all the time, but I don't have the bald issue... My hair is pretty thick.. Most likely due to the fact that I eat a lot of Leafy veggies and foods that are rich in silica, iron and calcium--which all promote thicker and fuller hair if I recall correctly.. Stay strong, Bob... Get a Jigo Merkin so you can live the life you're supposed to live...

My hairdresser told me there is absolutely no way I'm going bald. I don't doubt her, hair grows so fast and my hair is ridiculously thick, I have to get it cut frequently or I'll turn into sideshow bob.

I do wonder about wearing hats and how that does factor into the balding process ?
I'm sure baseball players have to be really at risk with wearing wool blend hats in 90 degree weather during the summers...

My hair has been thinning for a year or so and I'm only 18...might try some of that propecia and cut it short soon. It's kinda depressing sometimes. Last edited by chrisrich91; 11-25-2009 at 02:14 AM.. |

I'm fairly certain the hat thing is true. My buddy has a little bit of a receding hair line (not too bad) and his doctor immediately asked him if he wears hats. He does, all the time. When he finally stopped wearing hats every day his hairline stopped receding. It's still back farther than it was when I first met him, but the receding definitely stopped after he kicked the hat habit.

are we 100% certain that the baldness gene depends on your mother's father?
