The trade rumor season is upon us and "Do it Ferry!" will be the most often typed phrase from here to the deadline. so let's see how Danny has done so far with his wheeling and dealing.
February 24, 2006 Acquired forward Lee Nailon and a 2006 second-round pick from the Philadelphia 76ers for a conditional 2006 second-round pick; acquired guard Ronald Murray from the Seattle SuperSonics for guard Mike Wilks and cash considerations. October 14, 2006 Acquired forward-center Dwayne Jones from the Boston Celtics for guard-forward Luke Jackson and cash. February 22, 2008 Acquired forwards-centers Ben Wallace and Joe Smith and a 2009 second-round pick from the Chicago Bulls and guard-forward Wally Szczerbiak and guard Delonte West from the Seattle SuperSonics in a three-team trade. (sending out Larry Hughes, Drew Gooden, Cedric Simmons, Shannon Brown, Ira Newble and Donyell Marshall.) June 27, 2008 Acquired the draft rights to forward Darnell Jackson from the Miami Heat for a second-round draft pick. August 14, 2008 Acquired guard Mo Williams from the Milwaukee Bucks in a three-team trade involving Oklahoma City. (for Damon Jones and Joe Smith.) June 26, 2009 Acquired the draft rights to forward Emir Preldzic from the Phoenix Suns for cash considerations. June 26, 2009 Acquired center Shaquille O'Neal from the Phoenix Suns for forward/center Ben Wallace, a second-round selection in the 2010 NBA draft and cash considerations. (plus Sasha) so how would you rate him on a scale of 1-5? |

Easily a 4. The Mo trade was a 5 and the Shaq trade was at least a 3.5. I'd give the guy a 5, but there is still work to be done in terms of grabbing a scorer.
I'm confident he'll get it done and assuming that to be the case...he's a 5 and among the best in the league.

Ferry has consistently year by year improved the team. That's really all you can ask for from your General Manager. (added) LOL Jigo; let it be noted we posted at exactly the same time, and said (4). |

I might've been tempted to go for 5 before the Shaq deal. It's not to say that Shaq, in terms of worth, doesn't kick Sasha and Big Ben's asses, but there will always be the lingering thoughts of who else Ferry could've brought to Cleveland using such valuable trade chips. The Mo deal of course was legendary. BTW, another small trade was bringing in Cedric Simmons for David Wesley in Sep 2007. ![]() Last edited by The Special One; 12-19-2009 at 09:23 AM.. |

To me as well, it's very close to a 5. He didn't pull anything stupid and the vision has always been clear. Also, he shows consistency in going after certain players and the players he pursues in this manner usually prove him right (Delonte and Mo come to mind.) |

Not trading Wally because "he was happy with the team chemistry moving forward" automatically makes him a 1.
I could change my mind by the deadline..... |

LOL You just don't trade for the sake of trading. I believe nothing good enough was available for Wally. We gained cap relive so we were able to bring in Shaq's ginourmous contract.

plus we still have wally as a trade chip without even paying him a salary right now. I'd put him at 4.5.

Something amazing might happen with that posible contract. Ferry might get as TWO really good players by the trade line. He can match his contract up to anything the other team would want. Great chip actually. If I remember correctly some teams are actually targeting next off-season for the big FA signings....

But that won't be a trade....it will be a free agency signing....

But that signing will be contingent upon how well Ferry has done overall. Which is really the only significant criteria. Or in other words, our perception of how good of a job Ferry has done isn't really that important. What we should be asking is "how would LeBron rate the job Ferry has done"?

You also forgot Ferry's first trade, dumping Jiri Welsch on Milwaukee for a 2006 second round pick. That pick turned into Daniel Gibson.
Even Ferry's harshest critics would have a hard time being overly critical of the trades Ferry has made. It's the trades he hasn't made where he can be called in for criticism. In retrospect, I think the 10 player deal in 2008 was really a masterstroke. It finally allowed Ferry to unload most of the remaining unwanted players he had inherited plus 2 of his 3 2005 FA signings who had been disappointing, plus his 2007 pick that he no longer wanted. It positioned the team for its remarkable 2008-09 year, and provided upcoming expiring contracts that could potentially be used to land a bigger star (ultimately this turned out to be Shaq). Some have remarked that Ferry has been very active in remaking the Cavs roster, and point out that only LeBron, Andy, and Z remain from the team he inherited in June 2005. I disagree with this assessment. The hallmark of the Ferry administration has been stability. He has tended to value his own players (Shannon Brown being the notable exception), and has only made trades that he really wanted to make. He has never panicked. NBA rosters, despite the salary cap, are very unstable. I haven't gone back to check, but I suspect that very few teams have more than 3 players that were on the team in June 2005. Ferry inherited a very weak roster, and I am glad that almost all of those guys are long gone. As far as his grade, as I have said elsewhere, it's still incomplete. I'd rather grade him on the roster he has assembled, but based purely on the trades he has made to this point, he's got to be a 4+. |

Ferry is a mediocre GM. He hardly ever makes trades for the sake of making the team better, he only makes reactive trades to other teams. Every time we lose to a team in the playoffs,Ferry immediately panics and makes trades SOLELY to compete with THAT team instead of making a blockbuster trade so other teams will have to react to us.He continues to sign washed up players and in his eyes he thinks they are big help to Lebron. He tried to trick everyone by signing Shaq and make it seem as if he signed a superstar but in reality even though the name sounds good,Shaq is no where near a superstar anymore. He made some nice moves like Mo, Delonte and Moon, but he also makes some questionable ones like giving AV all that money to be a role player and passing up some good players in the drafts. He doesnt know talent thats why he think signing players like Wally and Anthony Parker are hits in Ferry eyes and he doesnt realize these are mediocre players. He is too nice of a person to be a GM and he thinks MB is a good coach.
