2017-2018 Around the NBA

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
He gets a lot of shit around these parts for reasons I can understand, so this is probably going to be considered a hot take:

I love watching James Harden play. He's probably in my top 3.

Thunder struggling to score again. This time against the Mavs who are on a b2b...

(Melo and Adams are out though)

Couple Mavs thoughts..

1: Carlisle needs to loosen the leash on Smith. He was screaming at him for dribbling too long but Smith was getting wherever on the court and making things happen. He needs to start sticking pull-up threes, I know he can, but Carlisle wont let him take any.

2: He also needs to tighten the leash on Harrison Barnes. Why does he get to jack up a bad three just because Smith passes to him to start the offense?

I know Barnes improved a lot, but I really hate that max contract for him for Dallas. I dunno. I really think they should make every game the Dennis Smith show. Kid is 24/8 and a handful of top highlights waiting to happen.

OKC thoughts: Damn...having some success tonight after being able to distribute Melo's 17 shots between Russ/PG/ other player catch and shoot threes. Against a much lesser team but still. I wonder if Melo was the right move...Kanter has been solid for the Knicks.

Totally agreed, and if he doesn't, I think it could cost Carlisle in the long run. He's going to have to adapt to his personnel here.... and I'm not just saying that for the sake of my fantasy team. The kid can break anyone down off the dribble, the Mavs would be wise to build off of that.

Although, at the same time, Smith needs to look to set up more off the dribble than attack, attack, attack.

I agree. And I commend Carlisle for trying to force-feed fundamentals, offensive system, and the "right way" of basketball to Smith. I think he will be a better player for it.(though Rick's got a checkered history with young guys and with PG's...but I wanna give him the benefit of the doubt and chalk it up to circumstance. )

But I think they'd be a lot better to build off of Smith's talent, spread the floor and run high screen&rolls all day. I know for a fact that Barnes is never going to be a #1 or #2 on a contender. Smith has that upside.

The other thing is Dirk...big elephant in Dallas locker room. Dude is pretty washed. His jumper is still nice and he does space the floor for Smith.... but he does not move well at all on either end and isn't rebounding. He's really kinda hurting the team at times. But if youre Dallas, you can't bench Dirk. Just not possible. I think he retires for sure after this year though.

Dallas is in a good sport rebuilding wise overall, a nice amount of young, solid talent and an elite prospect. They'll pick top 7 this year too probably.

Their biggest issue is Noel. They're going to end up losing that asset for nothing. Though they didn't exactly trade much for him. Maybe that says more about Nerlens than anything. I really wish he'd get a chance on a good team (like the Cavs) but the bird rights thing makes it not worth it or I'd definitely take the risk and throw them a late first for Noel.

Yeah, that's the kind of stuff I'm talking about. His vision is amazing, and that little rocker step for the three is something I can't remember any other player doing nearly as well.

A lot of fans are real haters. It's mostly just online though. People I know don't hate on James Harden as much as people online do.

lol.. we just watched Harden parade to the line all by himself more than the entire Cavs team by flopping his way all over the court.. and that makes "a lot of fans real haters"... ok. Maybe - just maybe - if Harden didn't use a style of play that so heavily involved tricking refs for his success - he's be more appreciated? It's his choice to play that way... not any fans fault.

Harden is an elite player, obviously. I dislike him because of the way he plays and I despise the refs for the way they officiate him.
