2018 Browns Free Agent Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I think we can all agree we want one of the top free agent WRs. The question won't be the money, it is which one can we convince to play here and actually be legit? I mean our luck with signing free agent receivers hasn't been good for a long time.

Because our QB's have been about as bad as watching a TV show with a girl: they are either talking the whole time or are on their phone and then asks you what happened.

If we do happen to sign a FA QB, you do that #1. First objective. If you can get one of the main ones to sign here, you contact a top FA WR and tell him:

"We are going to sign Alex Smith/Kirk Cousins and he will be our starting QB. How would you feel coming to CLE and making more money than any other team?"
--"How can I trust you that you are signing Smith/Cousins and I don't get trapped here with awful Kizer?"
"Call him up."
"Damn. You were right."

It couldn't be more clear to me that three years of being observers during free agency has been just as crippling, if not more, than the draft choices made during that time. Every professional sports fan has heard the saying, "pick best player regardless of position." At times I've vocalized that saying as being guiding principle, not Orthodoxy.

The Browns lost the young starting CB, TE, bridge QB, and DT in 2015. They replaced with an older CB and older bridge QB. In 2016, they lost young starting C, RT, FS, and WR and cut or traded a few veteran starters for low picks. They did not add any significant free agent. In 2017, they lost more veteran starting talent at TE, CB while losing a starting WR. They finally signed two solid free agents which solidified the interior of the offensive line, but those holes were caused by putting up little resistance to free agents walking in the past.

So when the team loses starting level talent repeatedly year after year, both as players leaving after the rookie contract or veterans being pushed out for a draft pick, the team has been left with a talent hole at multiple positions.

Free agency has to be seen as plugging as many holes with vets as possible this year. What makes football different than basketball is free agency coming first. In the NBA, always go talent first, because holes can be filled with free agents. In the NFL, failing to fill holes in free agency creates need picks, or the losses will pile up due to the glaring holes in the rotation.

And if too many holes go unaddressed, the front office has to factor need into their day two and three selections. Irresponsible management who create holes and never fill holes is far worse than breaking the "best player available, regardless of position" principle.

So: Free Safety, Cornerback, Running Back, Wide Receiver, Right Tackle.

Oh. And quarterback.

We should note that 3-4 of those holes are arguably the result of massively whiffed upon first round picks:

RB - Richardson
CB - Gilbert
RT - Erving
QB - Manziel

It's hard to feel bad for a guy like Bell, who will make what, $17m if he's franchise tagged for a second time or Cousins who would make $30m+ if he were tagged a 3rd time, but it ridiculous to me that a player can get tagged by his team more than once. Can't believe it's in the CBA.

NFL players are by far the worst league when it comes to business matters. Pretty damn closed to being brainwashed actually.

Man, fuck that guy.

Short of this being some sort of ploy to sabotage the team while already having a deal in place to become a Brown.

Fuck that guy.

He said he's got to do what he has to do for the sake of all the other RB's in the league. He said he has to do it for all the RB;s in the future who want to get theirs.

The Steelers will be fine without him, RBs don't really matter.

The Steelers will be the team to draft Rashaad Penny or Kerryon Johnson, and they'll immediately be a stud behind the Mike Munchak-led offensive line.

It's what good teams do.

I mean, that's certainly possible, but I also think that Freeman is clearly better than Coleman. There's a reason Freeman is the lead back there. So unless Freeman falls off significantly or gets seriously hurt, it's hard for me to see them getting rid of him so long as he continues to be productive.

You can point to him being less productive this year, but Atlanta's entire offense was a total shitshow for the first half of the season, so I'm inclined to believe that's not on Freeman. He looked incredible toward the end of the season after coming back from that concussion.

Topical.

Bell seems like a total jackoff. That doesn't concern anyone? A malcontent running back at an expendable position getting huge money. Hmm.

Compared to what we’ve had at rb the last 20 years. It’s total worth it.
