2018 Browns Free Agent Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Coleman still has the potential to be very good.

Make or break year for him.

Coleman was absolutely the poster child of providing a young player plenty of playing time and forcing them to learn on the field. Sometimes the player shows steady improvement like Njoku. Sometimes, Shon Coleman and DeShone Kizer regress and there's literally nothing on the bench to stop them from drowning.

I've been thinking a lot about which positions should be prioritized by the draft and which would be better as priority free agents. Depth is needed at pretty much every position. Some positions, like cornerback, offensive and defensive tackle are already young at the depth spots. A sprinkling of veterans at two million a year or so might be wiser than investing a draft pick. When I see players like James Burgess, Nate Orchard, and Hollywood Higgins getting significant playing time I can't but feel like moderate risk vet contracts would do this team a ton of good.

They had better not. He, along with Hyde and Smith are in my head canon for the Browns turnaround season.

Isn't there a website that will predict contracts for free agents? I'm curious to see what Tre Boston would get.

So, times the Browns-factor, $11 million/year.

Oh, is there some basketball news going on too?

I checked with spotrac, I know it's not the end all be all, but they have projected for cousins......5 yr 128 mil, 25.6 annually.

I'm just keeping my mind open to different scenarios. I think that would be a slight overpay reallistically, but not out of the realm of possibility if something pops up in regards to the qb prospects within the next few weeks.

I've just been thinking. Grab cousins, get another wr in fa, grab a starting cb or fs also in fa. Then we could go something like minkah and roquan with our 1st 2 picks?

I'm well under the impression that we are going qb at #1, just trying to see what others say.

I mean if we sign Cousins, I don’t think we have to take a QB at one so we can have a ton of flexibility in the draft and trading down from one would be the way to go.

Now, I am not sure if we will go for a LB if we trade down since we still have needs at RB, WR, CB. Now that being said with a trade down from one, we have so many options to choose from and extra picks so picking an elite talent at number 5/6 makes a ton of sense cause the available talent in the second round will be able to fill in a fair amount of holes we have without stretching for a player.

Part of me wouldn’t even be afraid to trade the acquired next year’s first and get another first in this year’s draft so we can fully fill out the roster. We can essentially get pretty much our top two nonQB targets in the draft almost guaranteed if we sign Cousins, so we may as well do that route if he takes the offer. We know his minimum price at least for us to sign him

I’m not too big on Cousins due to the price tag.
With the Browns having a ton of picks and cap space, this can set up the Browns to build a great team in the likes of Philly (currently) San Fran (under Harbaugh), Seattle, Baltimore (pre Flacco contract), Minnesota (current).

Those teams had qbs on rookie contracts and signed all of their talented players to big deals, Seattle put a ton of money on their d-line and the legion of boom, San Fran paid Bowman and Willis while investing in the oline...etc

All of those teams started to tail off once they had to pay their qb and lost talent elsewhere due to cap restraints.

Unless u feel that Cousins is of the talent level of a Brady, Rogers, Rothlisberger, Brees type who can lift the talent around him and make up for team deficiencies. It wouldn’t be prudent to put use so much of your cap space on him.

If you feel Cousins is a franchise/hall of fame talent yeah go for it.
In my opinion he’s not.

I’d love to build this team and develop Rosen/Darnold while they are on team friendly contracts for 5 years. That way, if they prove themselves as franchise top 5 level qbs, you break the bank and don’t bat an eye about it. In the meantime you have great qb play for a fraction of the cost and can build a great team around him.
