#25: ATH, Jabrill Peppers

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I think Randle is better

Eric Turner by a mile at this point. So sad he died so young of cancer.

Randall has been a stud for sure, but I think you are forgetting how fucking good E Turner was during his time with the Browns/Ravens. He was still with the team when the moved so I can understand blocking out some of those memories.

I'm not sure it's been a year two leap so much as just not playing him in a role he's terrible at. Last year, they tried to turn him into something he's not. This year, they are letting him play the role he is built for and, to the surprise of very few of us (that spent all last year bitching about how he was utilized), he's been good at it.

This is the exact reallson that as excited as I am for the remainder of this season, next season is what I’m betting on. We have had so many players on this team brought in for specific things and had their natural abilities ignored under Hue, and we are finally seeing some of these players break out or at least be able to utilize their strengths.

The key to building something successful is playing to personnel strengths and we are seeing that now. With a true number 1 WR potentially in this draft we will see Landry shine, which in turn (if even possible) will make Baker look even better. Peppers being utilized correctly will make the overall defense look better and so on. The future is very very bright.

He is pretty solid now (though I still can't believe he whiffed on that unblocked sack last week). I'll give him credit, it looks like he took his humble pie from his awful rookie year and worked hard and improved his game. Aside from the occasional boneheaded play, Peppers has earned his spot. PFF has him as 30th Safety in the NFL, which is pretty good for a second year player. It's slightly above average, middle of the pack starter. Randall is 25th for comparison. He has improved as the year has gone on. That's all I have asked. Guys like Jabril can either fork one way or another after the rookie year he had. He has shown me something with his attitude. (Again I have a guy in Berea so I know he rubbed some the wrong way as a Rook.)

Keep your mouth shut and keep improving Jabril. If he does, I don't think S is a big area of need next year. We just have to accept he wasn't as advertised in the return game, but that's a minor complaint.

Can I get a snap %

In seriousness he did have one sorry ass effort in a wrap-up attempt on a sizeable run which was frustrating but I’d accuse that dynamic of being ubiquitous

I remember seeing kindred out there a few times, I really need to know the snap %.

59/74 = 79.73%. 41 pass plays, 18 run.

On a side-note, TJ Carrie has only dipped below 70 snaps 2 times in the last 7 games. He had games of 60 & 63 snaps as lows. Dude has been putting in time.

Analytically, Peppers is actually having a sizeable impact preventing big yardage gains. It’s why PFF ranks him highly.

I don’t think he’ll ever become a safety that intercepts a lot of passes and is a terror in coverage. But, he is already great at preventing short-and-medium yard gains from becoming long ones. It’s also very possible he becomes a blitz threat.

Not upset about this draft choice at all. He may never become a Pro Bowler but will always be a solid starting safety.

Is his coverage grade (72.4, 3rd best in the secondary) invalid?

72.4 falls into the “above average” range for PFF grades

I don’t think that constitutes as a terror, but it’s a nice grade for a guy who’s primary skill was never considered coverage

Yeah, I did not mean he would be bad in coverage. He is good, and probably will continue to be so, but he will never be best used as a cover safety. It is not like he cannot play in the coverage role when he has to, it is just not his primary talent.

Peppers is allowing 12.1 cover snaps per target and 18.2 per reception. QBs are averaging a 121.5 QB rating throwing against him. Much of his coverage grade is because he does not get targeted too frequently and his yards/reception are 8.7. I.E., QBs are not throwing at him, and when they do, he tackles super quickly, but QBs generally complete the pass.

Peppers is really good. It was a good pick. But coverage is not his best attribute. He is not bad at it, just not a superstar.
