Yeah, I did not mean he would be bad in coverage. He is good, and probably will continue to be so, but he will never be best used as a cover safety. It is not like he cannot play in the coverage role when he has to, it is just not his primary talent.
Peppers is allowing 12.1 cover snaps per target and 18.2 per reception. QBs are averaging a 121.5 QB rating throwing against him. Much of his coverage grade is because he does not get targeted too frequently and his yards/reception are 8.7. I.E., QBs are not throwing at him, and when they do, he tackles super quickly, but QBs generally complete the pass.
Peppers is really good. It was a good pick. But coverage is not his best attribute. He is not bad at it, just not a superstar.
I am guessing Peppers makes atleast one probowl at some time in his career, with the way the probowl is now with the SB teams not participating and lots of players not going because nagging injuries, he will get in.
My big question with Peppers, could he move down to play some linebacker to not lose much against the run, but better matchup with TE's and backs out of the backfield. I think Peppers could be a real weapon when used like that.
And please stop using him as a return guy. He did have one good return, but turns out he really isn't that great at returning at the NFL level.
