Anthony Bennett

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
2012: Dion Waiters at 4 despite the organization doing zero homework on him. Taking him above Lilliard and Drummond, who I think we can all agree would be amazing to have right now, and would've likely helped us win a ring last year or at least be in a better position to win one this year. He also took Waiters over Barnes, which may not have been completely awful given that Griffin cleaned up Grant's mess by trading Waiters for JR/Shump, but Barnes would have filled a glaring need at that time. Not to mention this team desperately needs a young SF whether it's today with LeBron or 3 years ago without LeBron.

While i agree with most of your post its unfair to say they did no research on waiters. He was close to an assistant at Syracuse and had visited a number of times. Personally i think that makes the pick a bit worse because he must have heard him yell AIYEEE and still drafted him

Fair enough, I'm sure they do research on all players (watching film, talking to people, etc) but it's pretty ballsy to draft a guy that high that you didn't workout OR interview. Not to mention he had maturity issues at Cuse, wasn't even a starter, and was ball dominant for SG. He didn't even really fit with Kyrie at all. If you're picking a ball dominant guy... why not Lilliard? Or Knight or Kemba the year before? I still believe having Tristan and his terrible FT % on the team is why they passed on Drummond. And that really sucks because we were all enamored by him as fans and followers of the Cavs, and it turns out we knew what we were talking about.

Drafts under Chris Grant

2011:
1st - Kyrie Irving
4th - Tristan Thompson
32nd - Justin Harper (traded to ORL)
54th - Milan McVan

2012:
4th - Dion Waiters
24th - Jared Cunningham (traded to DAL for Zeller)
33rd - Bernard James (traded to DAL for Zeller)
34th - Jae Crowder (traded to DAL for Zeller)

2013:
1st - Anthony Bennett
19th - Sergey Karasev
31st - Allen Crabbe (traded to POR)
34th - Carrick Felix

So, out of 3 drafts and 12 draft picks with only ONE outside of the top 34 picks... we only have Kyrie and Tristan to show for it today. One of which is an overpaid hustle player that may or may not have resulted in the team passing on Andre Drummond due to similar weaknesses (FT shooting). And the thing is, I actually like Tristan, but I'm being brutally honest here. 5 years in the league and he still hasn't developed much an offensive game. Grant could've done worse with that picks, but he could've done better too.

Sure, we turned Waiters into JR and Shumpert so we were saved there thanks to David Griffin, but we passed on a few All Stars and probably could've gotten those two guys anyway if we wanted them. The Knicks were desperate to get rid of JR and wanted a future 1st rounder... not Dion Waiters.

The sad thing is most of these picks and trades (3 picks for Zeller) were ones we all questioned immediately after happening but we talked ourselves into them over time, because well... we're fans... and we hope for the best and trust that our GMs and scouts aren't completely awful at their jobs.

Along with dismissing positions he had already drafted... I also hated how Grant refused to carry more than 2 rookies onto the team in any given year. It's not like we were exactly stacked with the Alonzo Gee's and Earl Clark's of the world seeing PT for us.

Again, we got bailed out big time by LeBron coming back, otherwise we would likely be in the same position we were from 2011-2014. Which makes the people in other threads calling for LeBron to leave if the Cavs fall short this year sound even more ridiculous.

Great work but Hawes was a Griffin move. Love those stretch bigs that play no D, just like Phoenix!

Good catch on that. Forgot that trade took place shortly after Grant got fired. That was Griffin's first move as a GM. I'll even cut him a little slack for it given that 1) Varejao had gotten hurt (again) and that left a void a center, and 2) he was taking over midseason after Grant already went "all in" on getting the 8 seed.

Sigh.. Happy Trails Bennett.

Even more spectacular when you realize how close he is to Draymond Green in terms of measurements.

I know I'm not the only one thinking it.

Do I gotta be the one to say it? Fine.
Bring him back. You know why? Cause,Fuck the rest of the nba! That's why! He is our guy and is forever gonna be linked to us. He has more upside than sasha Khan and could take minutes from James jones or Jefferson. I mean shit out of our whole team the only young guys we have are Tristan Kyrie and delly. At least Bennett gives us a bit more youth and who knows he may be a late bloomer.
And just some wishful thinking out of spite I would love the cavs to win the title with Bennett on the squad just as a giant Fuck you to the rest of the league.
And what is it really gonna hurt huh? Can't be worse than signing these s leaguers to ten day contracts. He is a young guy and it would be the ultimate redemption story of he came back to the city that drafted him and turned it around and became a valuable member of the team.
Then we got the moz situation and the leagues love of small ball.
If moz leaves he could have a little core of bigs in love tt and Bennett we can groom Bennett into being our own draymond.

I'm being honest here I wouldn't mind it

:banghead:

It would be one thing if Bennett tried, and was just unskilled (because he is actually athletic). But he puts out an amazing lack of effort on the court.

I honestly thought he might have a chance to turn it around after his performance for team Canada this summer -- but then he came back and had his worst season yet thus far in Toronto.

But he can develop the tools are there and by all reports he is a good person just need to find him a role model to take him under their wing.
I just imagine this guy traveling Jr and delly mentoring him and LeBron training him

If he get get the mental side down dude can be a beast and reports are Phoenix wants him so that means there is still intrest he just recently started for team Canada.
Plus he is 22 Not 28 he has alot of time to develop and I think being on his original team with championship aspirations might light a fire under him and if he does start to come around and figure things out and we locked him up long term he could be a valuable cheap young member of our core for alot of years

Hawes was a grant move. It had been lined up for ages while the cavs tried to find a better deal. Griffin just followed through on it
