Cleveland Browns Quarterback Position

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Washington Times, Thom Loverro, Jan 5, 2017

"Cousins harbors resentments about his time here in Washington, dating back to his anger about being drafted by Mike Shanahan in the same draft as Robert Griffin III to his second-class citizenship in the building while RG III ruled the franchise to last year’s lowball long-term offer from the team... Cousins was asked Sunday following the (game) if he wanted to return to the team to play quarterback next season. He said, “It’s really not my decision to make. They chose to tag me (last year) and the same is true this year, so if they don’t choose to tag me (this year) then I think that question is answered at that point."

Doesn't sound like a guy too interested in staying outside of being forced by a franchise tag

Talk about a shitty situation of their own making. Let him walk in FA or tag him and then lose him after a season because he's even more pissed.

If they had any honor they would get on their hands and knees with a massive mea maxima culpa and beg him to stay. If he refuses to re-sign, let the dude go. But it is the Skins we are talking about...

I'm not well versed in the esoterics of the Franchise-Tag. Does he have any leverage if he gets tagged again?

I believe if you get tagged two years in a row, its a top 5 salaries in the NFL average for one year.

Better QB is undefeated through the 1st two rounds of the playoffs.

And 3 out of the 4 drafted outside the top 10

In fact, backing up to before this weekends results, 6 of the 8 starting QBs were drafted outside the top 10

Smith - 1st pick/developed with 2nd team
Ryan - 3rd pick
Big Ben - 11th pick
Rodgers - 26th pick
Osweiler - 2nd round
Wilson - 3rd Round
Prescott - 4th round
Brady - 6th round

Why would anyone be happy about this? Good lord.
1. There's no opportunity cost. Doesn't cost a draft resource and when we have an actual mountain of cap space it's not like we would be at all phased by swinging and missing on a free agent signing

2. Obvious upgrade. Maybe he's not a true FQB (still he could be), but he's clearly better than what we have. He's a pretty efficient QB with traditional stats and it doesn't help Coleman and our young wideouts development to have Hogan running the wild hogan by week 6 because our QBs are fragile and/or suck

3. Take it FWIW, but PFF grades him pretty highly. It's obviously not the end all be all and I disagree with some of their rankings (Alex Smith is 13th and anyone who saw my rant in the playoff thread knows how much I disagree with this, but it's an objective grading)

I'm sure I'll get some funny or disagrees, and its obviously all just pointless talk right now. But Taylor, re sign Pryor and Collins, load up on defense this year in the draft, and assuming the young players on the team continue to improve and the team could make a pretty big jump next year.

If a QB(s) isn't added, the team is still going to suck next season no matter what.

Edit: I didn't think at first you were referring to Tyrod Taylor. Yeah, in that case, it's not unreasonable at all to think this team could be .500+ next season.

Signing Taylor as just another retread QB is falling down the same path we've been through over and over again since 1999. I don't want any QB that is not capable of winning a Super Bowl at some point down the line in their career because that's the end goal here right?

Why add 2-4 meaningless wins per season and destroy draft positioning per usual.

Nah, not interested. Draft a QB.

Taylor is not a retread. He's not a complete package, but he somehow is getting the blame for that horrible Buffalo offense. He had worse WRs to work with than were on the Browns! OL too.
