Maybe Cleveland Love isn't so bad after all. He's been a beast outside of the Knick game.

Outplayed Drummond pretty handily

Cavs looked to feature Love tonight and he came through. Detroit had no answer for him.

I like playing him at C against shot blockers. Really opens up the floor and defensively we seem to try and cut off the passing lane to the big on a pnr. I’d rather keep starting him at C than TT. He provides nothing dynamic.

The thing about Drummond is that while he's large, he's just not a physical player with a bully mentality. There are some far less talented Centers who will give Love some issues because of how they use there bodies, but Drummond, in his own mind, still wants to imagine himself as a KG, inside/out player. He is super tall and will block some shots against Love, but he's just not the type to wear love out.

Also, I think the stats back this up, but doesn't Kevin almost always have great games after 2 or more off days? Awesome to see his statline tonight, 7-10 from shots inside the 3pt line and most of them were in the paint.

Love always plays Drummond well. Just one of those things.

Love played well. Drummond is just a mental midget. Averaging over 15 rebounds a game and can't get shit against Kevin Love? shit.

Love does pretty well against Jordan, Drummond and other "true centers" for some reason. Are you mad because these kinds of performances provide contrary evidence to the conventional wisdom that includes the Love-bashing narrative I've read so many times from you and others? Love can't defend, Love can't finish in the paint, trade Love for anything resembling a warm body as long as it's 7 foot tall.

I know Love does well against Drummond. But Jordan? when was the last time he played a head to head matchup against him before the other game? never is the answer.

Jordan was killing and overpowering Love on the boards the other night and we had to send double teams against Jordan. Drummond is a similar specimen and yet Love can handle him so far it seems and consistently outplays him.

Give me more examples of true bigs that Love does well against on the defense end, please. And no, i'm not mad... sigh.

Love is still not a 5 and can't defend the PnR, this didn't change. Love is still a below average finisher inside for a big man.

What's the point of your post?

Love has always been a good post defender. If your post game isn't massively polished then don't expect to abuse him down there.

How does that writer not know how to spell gauntlet? I thought maybe it was the person writing the headline, but she used it at the end of the article too.

Funny you mention that. I actually looked it up after seeing the title for the same reasons you bring up. Apparently gantlet is actually the original and proper way to spell the word and refers to a grueling and punishing task. Gauntlet is the more modern form which is also correct, but which has developed its own side-meaning referring to gloves and particularly with the phrase "throwing down the gauntlet" which means accepting a challenge (a reference to knights taking off their gloves). Who knew.

Well... I stand corrected.

I think, somewhat counterintuitively, Love is actually better against teams that employ standard centers than he is against Warriors type teams that employ small ball. This is partly because Love gets good leverage and doesn't concede post position easily. He is also an all time great rebounder capable of holding his own against the best rebounders in the league, even if he is conceding a few inches and pounds. But it's really on the other end of the floor where Love can really shine against such opponents. Traditional bigs just have too much trouble consistently staying attached to Love at the three point line...and if they do, that takes them away from the rim, clearing the way for the likes of LeBron to exploit. So even if Love concedes points on one end against those bigs, he more than makes up for it on the other end.

On the other hand, against a team like the Warriors, Love doesn't have the foot speed to deal with any aspect of their offense. He can't show and recover and, contrary to his famous game seven play, he can't be relied upon to regularly switch onto the Warriors deadly scorers. Against GSW, there are few places for him to hide, and wherever he is hidden he is just a pick away from being forced to guard Steph or KD. That's why the Cavs often trap pick and rolls involving Love, but that presents its own host of problems. Most importantly, unlike when he faces a traditional big, Love's value on offense does not offset his limitations on defense. Draymond (or even KD) is perfectly capable following him at the three point line, and can more than hold his own against Love in the post. And the Warriors seem to be content to switch everything against Love, in part because they have so many plus defenders but also probably because Love has not proven that he can punish mismatches at a consistent enough rate against them to warrant their concern.
