Baker Mayfield: Fire The Cannons

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I love the city of Indianapolis. I love the "500" and the Purdue Boilermakers were what caused me to be a football fan.

...however.

The fucking Colts cockblocked the Browns twice at key moments since I've been fan.

2007...Perhaps we're discussing how Joe Thomas at least got to make a playoff trip against San Diego Chargers that season? But the Colts went "Nope" and didn't even try allowing the Titans to swoop in for the 6th spot.

2011? Just...the fucking tank job. Could have had to deal with a lot less heartbreak had they just did some half ass season with Peyton Manning. But nope...they got Luck and we got the combo of Brandon Weeden and Trent Richardson.

What years did you watch Purdue that made you a fan? We are not really a football school.

And who is your favorite player of all time. Mine was Alstott. He played during my actual career. Met him twice, probably said one sentence both times I met him unlike Brees, but I loved watching that man run over people.

Actually got to have a conversation with Tiller about Alstott playing in his spread offense. Tiller smiled big and said, man he is the type of back my offense is made for. Imagine that beast going against dime packages in the big ten. He would have killed someone, lol.

Ryan Kerrigan was pretty awesome

Actually never met him. Seems like a good guy, and I am a fan, but he came out the same year JJ Watt came out of Wisconsin and sort of got over shadowed. Funny side note, I did a purchase loan of a 2nd home for JJ Watt's Uncle years ago. I know this is crazy, but he was proud of his nephew for some reason, lol.

Tiller era.

Earliest memory was (and please don't make fun of me for this) watching Billy Dicken play Oklahoma State at the Alamo Bowl while playing with Legos.

My first college football game was in 2000 seeing Brees play against my future alma mater, Kent State.

I also went to:
-Cincinati-Purdue, Akron-Purdue in 2001
-Illinois St.- Purdue in 2001
-The 2003 Citrus Bowl
-The 2006 Champs Sports Bowl
-2007 Purdue AT Toledo from the Glass Bowl.

Brees probably...just for that 2000 season...made me fall in love with football. I hope that's not too cliched to say, but I still to this day cheer for him. I also have a deep respect for Woodson due to my dad talking him up like a folk hero.

Also met Tiller at the 07 game. I told him I was a kid that played for "Uniontown Lake". He replied "The blue streaks?" and I was blown away that he knew that.

Tiller had allot of personality really fun to talk to. He used to do the Joe Tiller show from my bar, so I got to talk to him a decent amount. Those were good times.

And Rod Woodson was a G-d. Part me still wants to say the best player to ever play for Purdue. Another one was Leroy Keys. He was rb coach for Joe Tiller in those years. He was hilarious and came in all the time. Finished 2nd in the Heisman to OJ, but due to injury really did nothing in the NFL.

Not that strange when you think about it. If you're coaching in the Big Ten you'd better know your Ohio high school football. And Lake is a traditionally strong program which in Tiller's day had a highly respected coach in Jeff Durbin.

The best part about the year Baker had was that it was not done in a gimmicky way. He is going to have to naturally adapt as teams find his weakness, but the guy can make every throw, is accurate and has a quick release. He did not use elite athleticism or his legs to make a ton plays this year that can be shut down with a scheme. If you look at the 4 teams left in the playoffs they have QB's who are accurate, get ride of the ball quick, and can read a defense.

If we can stabilize the LT position, and add another quality WR we will have all the tools to be a top offense next year. I know there is notion we need to find a true # 1, but I am not sure how important that is with Baker. Outside of the Saints with Michael Thomas none of the other 4 teams left have a true #1. If anything we need to add a WR who has more explosiveness that is a home run threat like KC has with Hill. I would like to think Duke is that guy, but he had a down year.

Duke is shifty and elusive, but nowhere near as explosive as someone like Tyreek Hill.

They are. Should have had a state title by now...
Lord knows we tried to get one when we were there but only really made the playoffs.

Coach was friends with Dantonio and Tressel as well.

I just always thought that was fun considering I felt Hartville was out in the middle of nowhere to me.

Watching the Corden special.

Baker has such a natural charisma to him.

Dude could be a marketing dream for the NFL, and companies associated with him.

If he hasn’t already (blocked him a few months ago, so not sure) Colin Cowherd is going to have a field day with this.

“I don’t want my rookie QB going on late night talk shows. Sam Darnold isn’t out there doing Jimmy Fallon.....I’m just saying, not a good look.” :chuckle:

Plenty of top-level NFL players have gone on talk shows. That's why Mayfield has, and Darnold hasn't.

Darnold doesn’t have the face nor the personality for 6 minutes of prime time television FaceTime
