Baker Mayfield: Fire The Cannons

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Whatever happened to "Behind Baker"?

Was that just something he was doing for the draft, or do they plan on doing more shows?

That was just a mini-series. The "All The Way Up" thing is similar. Not sure why they weren't one larger mini-series, but who knows.

I figured the All The Way Up thing was apart of the Behind Baker stuff.

Interesting that they aren't planning on doing more shows. I loved the behind the scenes stuff shown.

They got around 6M views, too. Not bad.

The biggest worry I really ever had about Baker was the 6 foot 1 issue and how small QBs struggle in this league in most cases. I know its only 1 preseason game but after Tonight most of my concerns over it have been put to bed. Basically what i am saying is he wont fail in this league because he is simply too small.

Tonight I couldn't help but remember that Baker lost his starting job as a true freshman to... Davis Webb. Baker looked very strong in his first preseason action while Webb's white pants seemed caked in his own poo all night.

To be fair, Webb was later benched for Baker and was banished to Cal after Mahomes arrived.

True, but Baker looked much better than I expected. No jitter plays at all. Webb was 95% jitter plays out there. I can't help but compare them as ex-teammates vying for the same job. I'm becoming more comfortable with the forthcoming Mayfield Era. Getting stoked for it, honestly.

I was at a bar so didn't get to watch with sound, but what stood out was that Mayfield basically always knew when to throw the ball away.

I think I underrated Baker's sheer accuracy and arm talent due to the system he was in, which definitely helped put up those video game stats. But he was the top QB into tight window/contested throws by the percentages last year, and everything he's done since starting with the Browns has continued to demonstrate that. The guy just consistently puts it in position for his guys to make plays.

People are catching on.

Feels good. Can’t wait for next week. Looking forward to more improvement. Get that comp% up.

Who’s the guy who said Mayfield never went through reads??

Wasn't me, but that isn't his strength yet either. First off, during the course of his college season I became a bigger fan of his arm talent and accuracy. He also seemed to get much smarter within the offense. There's so much to like coming away from this game. There's areas to grow as well.

He has very good pocket presence, and my biggest beef during the college season with drafting Mayfield was his tendency to push toward the sidelines if a throw wasn't there. From there he wants to run for the first down. He is still doing it, and he is doing it against a second team defense. The Callaway throw to the sideline was my favorite play from Baker because he needs to look for that more often.

When he plays a first team defense, it won't be as easy, especially if they know that is Mayfield's tendency. So while his pocket presence was better than I expected, it still needs work.
