Baker Mayfield: Fire The Cannons

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I couldn't care less about what fans, Sal Pal, Lima, Rizzo, or anyone else not in the building thinks about who should start when. If the coaches and players think Tyrod should start, then he should start.

I just see this playing out in a Russell Wilson fashion where Baker is outplaying Tyrod so badly that it will be hard to keep him off the field at some point.

We’ll see. Excited as all hell for Thursday.

The expectations for Tyrod Taylor need to be dramatically cut down, IMO.

Independent of my own thoughts on Mayfield, Taylor has historically been pretty underwhelming. I realize that he may be able to suffice as "better than what the Browns have had" moniker people like to toss around, but that doesn't make him good.

Couple that with this team's complete inability to get the best out of players, and I don't really see the level of excitement others do, even if this team is obviously more talented.
I don't think anybody is expecting to see Tyrod lead dramatic game-winning drives or spearhead a 10 win campaign. But simply having a competent quarterback who won't single-handedly lose games is a vast improvement from what we're used to.

The expectation that your QB can garner 6 wins shouldn't need to be tempered or cut down. That's not exactly elite class... We know what he's here for and it's short-term stability.

I agree that Tyrod is here for a reason, and I start him no matter what for a large portion of the season. Mostly, I want Mayfield to be more than ready when he gets the job. Even if sitting was overkill.

That said, I just have to say that Baker being this far ahead of schedule is extremely impressive stuff. Not just his own knowledge of the offense, but the way he is taking players aside and helping them understand.

It makes me think that we might finally have our quarterback for the long haul.

I’ve read some TC reviews and while I am pleased that Baker’s ball placement has seemed to be translatable, I’d like to read about him getting the ball out quicker on a more consistent basis but that will only come with more reps and preseason game action.

Only saying that because I saw a few say it looks like he’s holding onto the ball too long; while you won’t see the repercussions of that in 7-7 drills, you damn well in game action.

All the more reason to be interested in preseason; at the very least, Baker has me excited to see how he’ll fare against advanced athletes in a game setting given the positives that have been noted.

Yeah, you start Tyrod, no question.

Listen, it is clear as day that Baker is outplaying Tyrod in camp. Not only that, frankly, I think it is very likely Baker retires as a much better QB than Tyrod by the end of their respective careers.

With that said, the team clearly follows Tyrod's leadership, and there are not really any costs to starting the season with Baker on the bench. The goal for this team should be to compete for the playoffs, and it is easiest to demonstrate that goal by starting the veteran.

However, if the team comes out and totally blows, then two things should happen: 1) Hue Jackson finally gets canned; 2) Baker takes over as the starter.

I feel like coming out and saying Baker is better for the long term kind of undermines Tyrod.

I mean yeah we all know that's true but Hue saying it is dumb.

I hear ya, but doesn't drafting Baker #1 scream that he's the long-term guy? Tyrod isn't stupid, he knows what the deal is. Hue saying it is just not denying the obvious when asked.

Maybe it doesn't matter for the team but it certainly is an unnecessary thing to air with how this fanbase and collection of local media jackasses behaves with QB's.

Just deliver the stock answer and move on.....no reason to frame Tyrod like he's a carton of milk that is about to expire.

It's gonna be bad enough as is but we don't need people asking players and coaches, in week 3, why a QB "who isn't a long term answer" is still playing.....because we unfortunately know that is exactly what will happen the minute Tyrod has even an average game.

You bought one of these shit uniforms when they’re changing them next year?

Nope.

Fanatics has a sale on the Tim couch era jersey style with the AL al learner patch. 60 bucks.

I don't disagree, but it puts Tyrod in a difficult position now where the media can ask him:

"So how do you plan to stay motivated when your coach doesn't believe in your long term success?"

Or variations like that. The Browns media are bloodthirsty and I don't trust Hue to massage egos or locker room rifts if the Browns media are able to press the right buttons. It also feeds into the ravenous fans who will want Tyrod cut after his first 3 and out. It's just adding unnecessary pressure on Tyrod and I won't give Hue credit for trying to create diamonds from coal.

He's like a 4 year old calling a woman fat to her face.

God I just Hue Jackson so much.

I think Tyrod is fully aware that he's basically getting this season with the Browns to audition for his next team. He's going to start and get every opportunity to play well and, if he does, he'll likely get a nice contract from someone next year. It's win-win for him and the Browns. They've given him a lot of weapons and he should be able to showcase himself this year.
