Dream Team 4: Golden State Warriors

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
wow, never seen Pop go after a player like that. Unfortunately this probably means that Kawhi's injury is pretty serious.

Pop is so much more articulate than Lue, damn. I can't picture Lue handling that situation even close to that level.

Lue is plenty articulate it's just that this is 180 degrees off from his style. In his public speaking he is very non-confrontational, live and let live.

He wouldn't do that, ever. Certainly not while being aggresive yet still being charming enough not to cause any backlash from the media/refs etc.

NBA will surely do nothing about this.

Pop needs to unleash the goons.

who cares if they even suspend him the rest of this series...he isn't an impact player and his absence means nothing for GS...

Hes a solid passer.

At the end of the day, the more minutes you can put on Javale or Draymond against Pau or Lamarcus is good for the Spurs. They are way too smart for JavaLOL.

ha. kawhi already ruled out, yea he's done

meanwhile i guarantee iggy will be fine and nail 4 threes next game

economist?

Adjacent. Ish.

I think everyone should be at least somewhat familiar with game theory. It informs how enormously unpopular policies/decisions can be highly profitable ones. And I guaranty most of us are feeling the brunt of such decisions being made at high levels across a variety of sectors on a regular basis.

As a lumbering big whose slow feet defensively all but ended my basketball career, I feel for the bigs who are in an era where they are repeatedly asked to defend far quicker players in space. If Zaza had crumbled and fallen into a player I would have felt sympathy (as I did with KD). But this play was not that. Zaza actually closed on the shooter fairly effectively and was completely under control with both legs under him. Kawhi elevated and had too much space so rather than maintain his position, Zaza actually gives up his balance to get in Kawhi's space. And he lunged with the leg that was closer to Kawhi to put his leg directly underneath the airborne shooter. Defenders just don't end up like that if they are actually playing defense. If they want to further close the gap they move their other leg closer so as to avoid contact (which would be a foul) while still attempting to take away space. So the fact that he chose to exit a balanced defensive position to enter into an unbalanced one, and lead with the wrong leg is a strong indicator to me that this was absolutely intentional. And given the multitude of his previous transgressions, I cannot believe people are so comfortable giving him the benefit of the doubt.

The league did not used to be above this. Take a look back at Laimbeer and some of his cheap shots. I just watched a good many of them on Youtube. Announcers couldn't believe they were giving him Ts for putting players careers at risk. That's less than a single point. The Pistons' "Jordan Rules" were essentially to force MJ to drive then take him out midair. The league has largely outgrown these tactics and no one is tackled midflight anymore. With as much money is at stake, ownership wants to ensure their cash cows are protected. That has meant a severe crackdown on such behavior. So pointing back to guys that were playing 10-20 years ago completely rings hollow as the game is fundamentally different now (people have been constantly bringing up Bowen's predilection to put his feet under opposing shooters in calling the Spurs hypocrites).

Either way, the concern here is that this is a dangerous play and that it is enormously beneficial to GSW for having made the play. The fact that we continually pick up Dahntay/Perkins for our playoff runs shows me that teams recognize the moral hazard here and are bringing in goons to take these matters into their own hands when necessary. The league needs to do something about this before the playoffs become a literal war of attrition rather than a platform for the best players to show their skills. Because it would be enormously detrimental to the league if their best players were targeted for injury as this play and the Draymond elbow to Conley's face a few years ago clearly did.

Didn't expect that from Pop if I were a Spur Curry/Klay/Durant wouldn't get another clean landing
