2012 Draft

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Waiters is less athletic as Wade. I think people forget exactly athletic Wade is/was. Same with Westbrook, don't see him doing things that Russ can do.

I do see explosive offense by attacking the rim, sometimes through people, but I don't think he's an insane athlete like those two. He does remind me of Ty Evans though, or Rodney Stuckey. If his jumper is better than those two, then he'll be a star.

I think he's just as explosive as Wade off the ground. Wade's ridiculous wingspan makes him seem more explosive than he really is, but I never thought Wade could jump out of a gym or anything. I don't think he's as quick as Wade, but Waiters is a lot more powerful, and will be able to use his body better to fend off defenders.

As for Westbrook, there are very few, if any that are as athletic as him.

Well, to be fair, Dwyane Wade at Marquette wasn't as athletic as Dwyane Wade is now, same with Westbrook at UCLA compared to now. Westbrook is a freak though. Point is though, these guys improve after they've been in the NBA, they get bigger, faster, stronger, etc. so i wouldn't hold Waiters' athleticism against him at the moment or try to pigeonhole him.

Waiters seems to have a solid build already coming into the league. Not sure how it's going to evolve although I'm curious to see if it changes. Further, I like the selection of him quite a bit. I think his athleticism is solid, love the way he attacks and it's nice to see we're bringing in a player with a mean streak and emotion on the court. I really think he's going to bring people to their feet at the Q quite a few times this season. I'm not saying strong candidate for ROY or anything (although the 4th selection of the draft should have a shot) but he'll get some recognition IMO.

Finally, I was watching an interview of him on YouTube; I can't remember if it was during or before the NCAA tournament. He was asked:
"Who do you think is the best SG in the tournament"
Waiters: Me.
"No I said the BEST shooting guard in the tournament"
Waiters: I know
"Who do you think is the second best then?"
Waiters: I dunno man whoever you guys put there

It was something along those lines. Others may think I'm an idiot for laughing at this but I got a kick out of it.

In reading about the draft process for the Cavs, I'm not crazy about how they were locked into drafting a wing with their 1st pick and drafting a big later while seemingly going into the draft with no intent on using their two early #2's.

Don't think you can go into a draft locked into to what to do. Sometimes you have to be more flexible and let the draft and draft board play out.

Cavs did come away with 2 solid prospects. I'm not upset with getting Waiters and Zeller. Still not totally buying into the trade up for Zeller and how they had him rated a top 10 player in this draft.

They didn't have Zeller rated top 10, they had him rated "just outside the top 10." As did many mocks/experts (9-14 range).

And we just signed perhaps the best undrafted rookie (definitely top 5). Has to make people who wanted a 2nd round pick so bad pretty happy. He could've gone #28 to OKC.

Whether that's cocky, confident, or both, I LOVE that!!! Kinda attitude we need, as long as he's not out of there like Artest (MWP)

One thing to keep in mind when we talk about bringing in 3 or 4 draft picks and compare to the "Price, Daugherty, Harper, Hot Rod" year is that draft picks were older then. Price and Harper were 22, Daugherty was 21 and Hot Rod was 24. All had played 4 years in college. Nowadays, we're mostly talking about 19-20 year old kids (Zeller aside, I suppose - and he's viewed as "old"). Not sure how much difference it makes, but I'll bet it makes some difference.

It's certainly altered the perceptions of some fans. Zeller's "downside" is that he's "old", when it used to be that was the normal age for guys to come into the league. I actually think a big man with a few years of college ball has more opportunity to improve his post game. If you have no post game at all, and a lot of these high school/one and done's don't, you can't even attempt it much in games. Players are more likely to just stick with athleticism. But if you've got some decent post skills and footwork that you worked on in college, you can actually use some of that in games and improve.

Yeah, he got "old" at one of the best programs in college basketball. People physically mature at different rates. Oden looked like he was 30 as a freshmen at osu, Zeller still looks like a kid at 22. The main thing is when will he become useful in the league. It took Anderson three years to get to starter status, and remember he was a 30 overall pick in a strong draft.

Both Jason Lloyd and Mary Schmitt Boyer reported that the Cavs had Zeller ranked in their top 10.

I don't hate Zeller. I think he's a very solid prospect. Also don't completely hate the trade up for him but don't agree with it personally and making it in this year's draft.
I've seen it written a few times now that Kevin Jones was supposedly a definite 1st round pick (apparently not). Not saying that's totally wrong but was it a rumor now being reported as fact or just a possibility someone threw out there in an internet report?

They would have taken Davis if they could, so they weren't exactly locked in on a wing. I think it's pretty clear that they didn't have Robinson rated higher than Waiters, or at least there wasn't enough separation between them to ignore need. If they viewed Robinson as that elite of a talent, they would have taken him.

Trading 24, 33 and 34 for a guy you have rated ~11th is a good deal and exactly the kind of deal that a lot of people here were hoping for. (they used their two 2nds to get Zeller, so they definitely used them). It's fun to think about the big names we could have gotten with those picks, but we got a lottery talent at a position of huge need. I can't complain about that.

Kevin Jones was reportedly given a promise to OKC at #28. But when PJIII fell, they took him instead.

Scott & Grant said Zeller was "just outside" their top 10 at the presser (on cavs.com). I trust them more than MSB haha.

In the presser right after the draft Scott said, "we had Zeller in our top 10... top 11."

So I'm guessing he was #11 on our board.

And so it begins

@WojYahooNBA: Anthony Davis suffered a severely sprained ankle in a Hornets workout and almost assuredly is unable to play for Team USA,

Why am I not suprised?

It appears we will have the most productive player out of this draft.
