A Closer Look at Joel Embiid's Injured Foot

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Unless we're moving Waiters, I don't see a need for Afflalo. Personally, I'd rather have Tobias Harris than Afflalo. How about 1 & 33 for 4, 12, & Harris??

That would be a lot of overlap with Bennett, and I also do not think Harris can be the defender we need at the 3. If anything, I would try to get Harkless, but he has less value than AA and Harris, so Orlando would need to kick in to account for that.

Chris grant? Is that you?

In my mind, there is a difference between trying to outsmart people by picking guys like Thompson, Waiters, or Bennett and taking a guy who was a lock to go number one before he picked up the injury to his foot.

I just think that if Griffin believes that he has the best chance to be the best player in this draft then you shouldn't worry about whether he is going to play this year.

We didn't take JV because we were worried he might not come over right away, and we didn't take Noel because we weren't sure if he would play last year. We weren't good in either of those years, and while I want us to be good this year and think we will try to be, there is no reason why we should be scared to play the long game with a supremely talented player.

Unless you have the SportsVu camera data, the best you can go for is blocked shots and defensive regularized adjusted plus minus.

If you have SportsVu data, then you can look at opponent shooting frequency and percentage when the defender is within a certain radius.

More bad news for Embiid: Sources say that the foot and back fractures aren't the only issues with Embiid's physical.

I read that one of his knees was an issue, knee on the opposite leg of the broken foot. It was on a Pacers forum iirc from a poster who is a Kansas alum, tifwiw

Being 7 feet tall in general carries with it all kinds of stresses on the body that are not present to shorter people. Combine that with being 7 feet tall and playing a sport that requires you to run and jump constantly on a wooden floor surface, and it should be no surprise that the body will be subject to various failures. While some have fought back from the injuries, enough have not that it makes him very frightening to select.

That very well could be a possibility. Your body can overcompensate for an injury to an opposite limb and you wouldn't even know it, just by modifying your gait or how you run and put differentiating pressure on your legs.

Look at D-Rose, wasted a year to train only to waste another year by overcompensating for his ACL knee with his healthy knee.

Good read & thanks for sharing. It makes me feel even more optimistic that Embiid can return to full health. We aren't talking about Sam Bowie, Greg Oden, or Andrew Bynum here. I had to play with orthotics in my shoes and that's a very simple fix.

Only Embiid's issues are not going to be fixed with some orthopedic shoe. It is not just some easy fix. They mention Ilgauskas in that article. Talk about how he had a productive career after missing time at the start. What they don't mention is that the damage to his feet cost him most of his athleticism. He was never the same player he was when we drafted him. What happens to Joel when he gets injured again with another stress fracture? He's already had 2 in less then a year. I don't like his odds.

I worry that D-Rose is simply too bouncy for his own good. Hope i am wrong because he is one of my favorite players in the NBA but i don't think he will ever be the same player he once was.

I was smitten by JoJo. Big fan but the fact he is out an expected 4-6 months, then you have to work him into shape, then monitor his minutes all the while worrying he may have another injury. It's way too risky.

@BobCooney76: Source says Sixers are very much interested in grabbing Embiid at No. 3 should he fall to them.

Seems like a typical smoke screen; Sixers might be trying to move up to #1 still. If they are trying to acquire that 3rd lottery pick to move up, this might be trying to force the Cavs hand.

The team interested in trading up to #1 is interested in drafting #3 the player that Cavs want to grab #5 with the Jazz pick if the big trade occurs?

Lol, what a smokescreen.

The smokescreens are about to hit their prime soon and for the next 48 hours. Nothing will happen until draft time, so buckle up.

I entered this thread and I must be on Mars. Embiid has more red flags than the former Soviet Union and people still want to draft him?

Yup. I want to sign the contract in his thin African blood while using a piece of one of his shallow broken bones as a pen.

All of the "red flag" talk is media speak up to this point. I mean, he definitely has medical issues, but other than the Bucks owner, you haven't heard any team (especially the Cavs) say that the injuries were bad enough that he won't fully recover in their opinion.

I still doubt they take him #1, but if they really think that the foot injury isn't a long term issue, then the trade down to #3 is very real.

And sometimes nothing happens during the draft. At least at the top.
