A Closer Look at Andrew Wiggins

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Our new GM said he wanted the pieces to fit. Drafting Parker would make him seem like the biggest con man in the front office. Of course trades could always happen but Bennett and Thompson don't have really high value. Plus on the mental side, having 3 Canadians boosts morale among them. People underrate that aspect. Read about the Spurs and how their international players get along. Ginobili and Belinelli speak Italian to each other during practice and help each other with translations, etc. Varejao got along with Z when he was young and that helped him improve. Off the court relationships can translate to ones on the court.

He said he wanted pieces that fit. Not that he'd do everything in his power to try and make the current pieces on this team fit.

He should be allowed to construct the roster how he wants, which includes not being tied to the previous GM's decisions.

Frankly I think it's laughable to factor in Bennett when making this pick. If they pass on a guy who they feel is going to be a better player long term in order to take a guy who fits better with a dude who very well might not even be a rotational big.....

Sam The Bullshit Whisperer is saying the Cavs are leaning towards Wiggins at the moment in his weekly chat.

Also, says one scout thinks Wiggins will be Corey Brewer.

Parker showed up fat and out of shape. Can't really blame Gilbert here. It's like going to a professional interview in a dirty white T and jeans.

I wouldn't laugh too much. The "Wiggins looks like a rich man's 3&d guy" scouting report crops up from a number of different & reputable sources and to an extent I can't deny it. Much of Wiggins' popular rep comes from his high school scouting report, not his college scouting report.

For a scout to bring up Corey Brewer is laughable, the talent gap between the two is massive. It took Brewer years to make an impact in the NBA- he was obviously over hyped from back to back titles in college. He was never asked to more than he could for UF with Noah and Horford on the roster.

For the first year or two Wiggins would fill a 3&D role for us, but as he improves he'd add more and more to game and offensive responsibilities.

Has anyone heard of a scout or GM emphatically say they love Wiggins? All the hype about him seems to be coming from more of a fan and media perspective. The guy has been compared by scouts ranging from players like Gerald Green, Corey Brewer, Harrison Barnes, to Paul George, T-Mac, and Kobe.

On the other side, you have teams wanting to trade up to 1 for Jabari. Utah, Boston, Milwaukee...they all want Parker. Says enough to confirm to me that the basketball people like Parker over Wiggins.

I am not into bashing one to make the other look good, that is silly. Each one stands on their own merits and I think each one brings a skillset that is very dynamic and either draft pick will be fine with me. It's nice to debate but to beat one up to make the other look good doesn't strengthen a debate, it cheapens it.

Scouts hyped up Swift back in the day as well. Scouts in the NBA are paid lackeys.

How confused people must be after reading these reports, assuming Wiggins must have averaged 9pts/2rb in college, and then they check his actual college stats.

I agree. There have been WAAAYYYY too many alleged quotes from scouts that make me feel very uncomfortable about Wiggins. So many guys just saying they don't see it with him and that his personality on the court will also prevent him from becoming great.

With Jabari, EVERYONE says the guy is going to be one of the best scorers in the NBA. Yes, almost all of them also say he is a terrible defender though.

From the beginning, I have said you take the top scorer. You pair him with Kyrie to create one of the best scoring duos in the NBA. Then you fit the rest of the roster around them. I like Dion, but he isn't a good enough reason not to take Parker. I also see people saying well Bennett becomes pointless then with Parker.... Who gives a shit? Bennett had one of the worst rookie seasons ever. Trade him for players that fit or continue to bring him off the bench. You really aren't going to take Parker because of ANTHONY BENNETT?!? To me, that is absolutely crazy.

It'd be very easy to find defensive players at SG and PF to fit with Kyrie and Parker. Much easier than it would be to find great scoring talent. We already have Varejao to hold down the defense and rebounding at PF for now until we found someone else.

Too many people severely underrating Wiggins and overrating Parker. I understand though. People make mistakes, it's why all time greats like Dirk and Kobe were drafted after 10 picks and other guys like Darko were drafted #2 ahead of Carmelo and Wade. The scouts and "basketball people" are not right even half of the time when it comes to players in the draft.

You want to bring up mediocre athletic small forwards to compare to Wiggins. I can play that game too, plenty of empty stats, no defense forwards in the history of the NBA. Here is what Jabari Parker reminds me of (Shareef Abdur Rahim):

It's funny how Wiggins was a can't miss prospect until we get the #1 pick..

Well, come on. The media and fans create hype, NBA front offices do the real scouting. There are plenty of GMs and scouts that love Wiggins as a prospect, the ones that actually have a shot at him are keeping their real intentions under wrap. But to answer your question, there's been boatloads of speculation that Philly is enamored with Wiggins- whether that's a smokescreen or not is up for debate.

How do we know they don't want Wiggins? Because their version of Sam The Bullshit Whisperer said so? I don't believe anything that's getting leaked around this time of year, I highly doubt we actually know the true intentions of whom they really want in a trade up.

IMO, they're only targeting Jabari there because they know Cleveland is taking Wiggins at 1.

Emboldened the key word there. Alleged quotes from scouts mean very little to me- I really couldn't give a shit that they "don't see it with him" or don't like his personality, the guy's an elite talent that looks like the best two-way wing to come out since Durant. It's not all hype with Wiggins anymore, I don't understand how everyone's conveniently forgotten he set KU's freshman scoring record while being a consensus 2nd team All-American.
