Cleveland Browns Quarterback Position

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
There was a lot of love for RG3 on this board during the draft and years later he magically appeared on the roster. Then there was the whole Tank for Teddy season. Wouldn't that be something if he made his way here too?

Mike Zimmer says Sam Bradford 'earned the right' to be the Vikings' starting QB

Vikings coach Mike Zimmer sure doesn't sound like a coach who is ready to return his rental quarterback. He sounds like he wants to stick with Sam Bradford for at least one more season.

On Tuesday, two days after the Vikings' 8-8 season wrapped up, Zimmer endorsed Bradford as the team's starting quarterback.

"I think Sam has played great this year, No. 1," Zimmer said, per the St. Paul Pioneer Press."I think he's earned the right to be the starting quarterback, and right now all I'm worried about is Teddy (Bridgewater) getting better. ... Sam has done remarkable, the things he's done this year with all the things that he's had to do."

No, Zimmer did not give a specific update on Bridgewater, who tore his ACL and dislocated his knee during the Vikings' final preseason practice, which prompted the Vikings to give up a first-round and fourth-round pick for Bradford.

"Teddy is a guy that will do everything possible to get back as soon as he possibly can get back, and he would be a guy that I would never bet against," Zimmer said.

Given the circumstances, it's remarkable what Bradford accomplished this year. In 15 starts, Bradford completed 71.6 percent of his passes (an NFL single-season record, by the way), averaged 7.0 yards per attempt, and tossed 20 touchdowns and just five picks. His passer rating fell just a tick below 100 at 99.3.

Keep in mind, he did that without Adrian Peterson and a capable offensive line, which allowed the 10th-most sacks. According to Pro Football Focus, Bradford posted an 87.2 passer rating under pressure -- tied with Matt Ryan for the second-highest passer rating. Offensive coordinator Norv Turner also left midway through the year.

So yeah, Bradford earned the job.

This doesn't mean Bridgewater's career as the Vikings' quarterback is over.Bridgewater was never guaranteed to be healthy in time for the 2017 season and Bradford's contract expires after next year, which could open the door for Bridgewater to resume his role in 2018 -- if the Vikings pick up his fifth-year option.

The point being, all of this makes sense. The Vikings are not going to bet their 2017 season on Bridgewater's recovery from a gruesome knee injury when they have already have a good quarterback on their roster. Especially not after they traded a first-round pick to acquire that quarterback in the first place.

Sam Bradford plays dink and dunk football and is a game manager. That's why his completion percentage is so high and his interceptions are so low. 20 touchdowns? I cannot stand the way he plays football.

Not interested in the Browns hitching their wagons to another 30 year old QB.

Pass.

Unless you're talking about the Browns getting Bridge? In which case I defer to guys who are more knowledgeable about him and his game.

His game is similar to Bradford's for better or worse

There's talk the Redskins will let Cousins test FA. Would make him the highest paid QB in football without hesitation.

Yes, I'm starving for a QB. But I think Cousins has every tool needed for top 5 QB. I think he's top 10 now. To get that without giving up a draft pick when we have 695 billion dollars in cap space?

Yeah, sign me up.

Yeah, sign me up.

I think top 10 is reasonable.

If you figure Brady, Brees, Rodgers, Roeth, Luck are the top five then based on preference you probably fill out the top ten with some order of Matt Ryan, Russ Wilson, Philip Rivers and prior to this season Tony Romo and Cam Newton.

Now you have guys like Mariota, Dak and Derek Carr who are looking like they can break into the top 10.

But yeah...I think at the very worst Cousins is in the top HALF of the league.

Is Luck really top 5? Throws way to many interceptions for me.

And if we pay a ton for Cousins, how much longer till Brees and Brady are no longer top 5.

Might not be a bad idea to throw a ton at Cousins with a huge front loaded contracted.

I'll tell you one of the best things this scenario would accomplish, no high picks wasted on non-franchise level QB prospects. Sign me up.

Found my autographed Ty Detmer card while cleaning out my bedroom. Bidding starts at $100.

I think making Cousins filthy rich is well worth not going through a few years of wondering if the QB the Browns drafted high will be a bust or not. Give him what he wants and buy two of the top five OL FAs out there. Probably add a secondary guy in there too.

Imagine not having to take a QB and using all the first round picks over the next three years on building the nastiest fucking defense imaginable. Along with a couple more weapons on the offense in the second round.

Of course it would be nice if Cousins was a couple years younger, but he does have low-milage relative to his age.

... He's still younger than rookie Brandon Weeden.

Cousins and RG3 on the same roster?

Again?

While I don't mind the idea of Cousins I don't think that bidding against the Redskins in free agency is generally a good idea and it's going to be a tall order for him to live up to whatever contract he ends up with.

Similarly I'm not sure that making a big splash in free agency on the OL is a good way to go. I would expect them to invest some money in keeping Bitonio. Thomas isn't going anywhere. In limited snaps it looks like Shon Coleman may comfortably earn a starting spot next year and I believe Greco (assuming able to come back early in the year) is under contract next year for next to nothing for a capable OL. I'd like to see them make a mid-tier OL signing on someone that can compete for a starting spot and provide depth across multiple positions. And play center. Definitely play center.

Why you guys army high on Garrapolo is beyond me.

Hugh loves a quick decision maker and that's what Jimmy G is with great accuracy and quick release. He has learned after great minds like Brady and McDaniels and lit it up in his starts this year. And no he's nothing like Cassel or Mallett. Jimmy G was a highly touted prospect who went in the 2nd round and learned and showed franchise level stuff.
