2017 Draft Prospects Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Problem #1 with that article was formatting. You had to scroll down 3,000+ words about Maycock and his opinions on other prospects before seeing the section about the Browns, and I doubt many people bothered.

You're welcome.

Every Monday.

Every Monday.

What I found more interesting was the Maycock breakdown of Joe Mixon:

Mayock thinks the elephant in the room might be best off being out of the room. Two elephants, actually. Quarterback Chad Kelly and running back Joe Mixon, in particular, are two good prospects who won’t be in Indianapolis because they’ve had major disciplinary and/or criminal problems off the field. “Remember Michael Sam?” Mayock said. “For him it was a circus at the combine. Here is what I think is going on, and it’s worth a conversation. I almost think it’s an advantage Mixon won’t be there. He won’t get poked and prodded from 5 in the morning to midnight for two days at the combine. He won’t deal with all the questions from all the teams. We know Joe Mixon is gonna be in the NFL next year. Tyreek Hill went in the fifth round last year, after all his trouble in college, and the Chiefs got away with one, and he’s been clean off the field since the draft. Every team will vet him.”

Mixon punched a woman in the face in 2014 and was kicked off the Oklahoma team for the season. He did later return, but the video of the incident has haunted him and caused the NFL to ban him from the combine. Albert Breer of The MMQBspoke to Mixon, who said he was not upset about being excluded from the combine. “It’s not in my hands, to make that decision,” Mixon told Breer. “At the end of the day, I respect the NFL not inviting me. And I’ve got another opportunity to show what I can do, at the pro day … They came up with a decision. And like I said, I respect it.”

Breer will write in-depth about Mixon later this week here at The MMQB. For now, be ready to get inundated by combine talk. Mayock and NFL Network will bring the event into living rooms Friday through Monday, beginning at 9 a.m.

We’ll have staffers of The MMQBon hand, writing later this week. We’ve got some good stories working, so check back often.

• EVALUATORS ON JOE MIXON: NFL teams are figuring out what to do about the talented back with the troubled past

If we don't get Mixon, I think Keys is gonna punch RCF in the face.

I haven't really looked up on the story anymore and never actually got deep into it. Has he ever done anything to better himself since then? Joined groups? a lot of volunteering? Used a transgender bathroom?

To me, that would have a big impact on me being okay taking him. But if he even sniffed trouble past that 2014 incident, no way.

There's a handful of 3 down running backs in this draft, Clement from Wisconsin and Smith from Michigan among them, but Mixon intrigues me because his talent level is right there with D'Onta Foreman. There's explosiveness as well as receiving potential with Mixon the others don't have, but certain teams can't draft him due to his past.

If you want 3 yards and a cloud of dust on every carry, Smith is your man.

...And if you want Questionable for Sunday, Clement is your man. I'm leaning toward drafting a RB before those two. Mixon's backup Perine would have a role on Sundays, and he has low mileage. Connor from Pitt looks like he could help an NFL team, but he runs awfully high for a big guy. I'm wondering how long he will play against NFL sized defenders.

Man, I wish I could disagree three times out of my disdain for Clement, Smith and Foreman.

I don't think any of those three are worth much in this class, which is so stacked.

I think Foreman has starting potential in the NFL, the other two are a shot in the dark day three. RCF doesn't seem too keen on drafting a RB before day three, I'm guessing who will still be there.

Mixon intrigues me as well. I feel like he's going to have to answer to the general public as well as with teams in order to be palatable to draft. I can see Hue saying all the right things on his behalf, but Mixon is going to have to rebuild his own character to owners.

I'd take Mixon with TEN's 2nd rounder, that guy is a stud.

Since I'm ripping peoples opinions on RBs, may as well throw some of my own guys out there.

2nd-3rd round:

Christian McCaffrey - The third best back behind Fournette and Cook for me, and I think he's a true three-down guy who I'd take at 33.

Kareem Hunt - Might be good enough for me to take anywhere from the middle of the second round on. Some call him too small, but he's always falling forward and picks up hidden yards. Does not fumble.

Alvin Kamara - Not a great fit for Cleveland because of DJ, but his athleticism and balance are elite level. Would excel on a team like New England who would use him in all sorts of ways offensively and on special teams.

3rd-4th round:

Jamaal Williams - For my money, the most underrated back in this class. Could start at the NFL level in year one, and be a 2-down, 1000/10 back with potential to improve in the passing game.

Semaje Perine - His lower leg strength and vision are superior to most others in the class. Let him get low and work through a tough OL and he can be a starter at some point.

Late Round Sleepers:

Chris Carson - Runs too upright at this point, but is a steamroller of a back and someone who gets North-South with authority.

Elijah Hood - Does not get enough credit, and is injured, but runs with a lower center of gravity and has enough lateral quickness to make me think he's got starter potential.

Donnell Pumphrey - Tiny, Warrick-Dunn look-a-like that cuts you to death.

Elijah McGuire - Surprised at the Senior Bowl, but seems to have a good handle on understanding where the holes are and how to get up and down

Roger Ebert had an easier job than Steven Spielberg. Appreciate seeing the targets. I'm just about to the point of giving up on Johnson. He's supposed to be a big play weapon which makes up for his small frame and relative uselessness in the first two downs, but I'm still waiting for the big plays. He's got great hands and runs great routes, I'm just waiting for the payoff. In the meantime, his presence on the roster kind of eliminates some of those shifty backs weighing on under 210 pounds from my own personal, utterly useless draft board. I want to see more of Williams and Carson.

James Connor from Pitt is someone who could be targeted in the 3rd or 4th. This years class is that deep.

I like Conner as well.

Edit: Dumb comparison removed. Also - fuck cancer.
