Twin Peaks

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Actually, it wasn't so much a defensive retort against Jack as it was a back-handed, sarcastic jab at FrontPageNews who seems to think that all the great players from more than about 25 years ago would suck in today's NBA because most of today's players are better.

So it was a totally off topic jab at a website none of us were talking about?

I don't believe him.

And in the case of TV, basically all the best shows were made in the last twenty years, outside of a few outliers. If I were to list my top ten, I'm not sure any show that ended before the year 2000 would make the cut. If I were only listing sitcoms, that might change (Seinfeld, obviously, among others), but I'd probably only put Arrested Development in my top ten overall as far as sitcoms go.

TV's evolution was basically entirely a product of the cable revolution, which HBO kickstarted in the late nineties and FX piggybacked off of. From there, every cable network essentially had to have their own dramas, which is how we ended up in a place where even shitty networks occasionally toss up great shows.

No, FrontPageNews the poster here on RCF. Or maybe it was Sir'DomPointer. He seems to think that none of the great NBA... oh, never mind. Not worth the effort to explain myself.

I mostly try to stay out of Gen Pop, so I'm not too familiar with a lot of the shittier posters these days. Except @The Oi, of course.

Well, I think it's pretty obvious that some shows show their age more than others, and Twin Peaks felt that way for me. That's also why I said "a lot of older shows" and not "all older shows." Some hold up. Some don't. And a lot of it is preference-based, as are most things. I grew up on The Wire and The Shield, which makes it all the harder to go back and watch older cop/detective shows.

I also think it's a lot easier to go back and watch old shows you've already seen than it is to watch an old show for the first time. With the former, there's a nostalgia factor at play. With the latter, you'll likely find yourself comparing it to more recent shows that have tackled a similar genre or concept better.

And to add to that, I think TV is one of the rare mediums where, if you were to poll people on the best shows ever made, the overwhelming majority of them would be made from the year 2000 to now, or at least have ended after the millennium (I see you, Oz and The Sopranos). Yeah, you'll get a handful that aren't, but TV as a storytelling medium really evolved in the late nineties and early 2000's into what it is today. Prior to that, shows were much more primitive, procedural, and lower-budget, and there weren't nearly as many cable networks making compelling television. Cable dramas in general didn't really become a thing until HBO gave us Oz and Sopranos. Now there are dozens of cable channels offering compelling shows.

You'd get no such consensus if you polled the same people on books and films.
I get what you're saying. At various times I tried to get into The Sopranos, The Shield, and Breaking Bad on the recommendations of co-workers and friends. Made it through about half a season each before I just turned them off. I just couldn't get into them. I guess I just didn't find them personally "compelling". As you said, a lot of it is personal preference. I'm also sure that much of my TV watching taste has to do with nostalgia. And I guess I tend to watch more science/history/documentary shows and sports. So I'm probably not the right person to judge "quality" TV dramas.

Who watched last night? What a trip. SPOILERS below, just in case.

Very clear that there's nothing holding David Lynch back during this run and I'm 100% here for it. Seeing Laura and Coop back in the Black Lodge after all these years was completely surreal. Love a lot of things included in the first two hours:

-The varied locations
-Compelling new characters
-Not forcing in the old characters... so far the re-introductions have been perfect
-The show is clearly going to be much darker
-The death of Sam (glass box watcher) and Tracey was wild
-Bob already on the loose

Note that the next two hours air Sunday but are already available with Showtime on demand. Haven't watched those yet, though.

I love the show. I think you can argue Twin Peaks was ahead of its time when it aired. Sure, other shows have gone further, but given more leeway to do so.

I still couldn't get over seeing Coop in the Black Lodge; and badly wanting him to get out.

The premier went just like you'd expect from Lynch. Mysterious, ambiguous, some-what confusing, but captivating. By the way, if you didn't watch Twin Peaks to its entire run, don't bother watching unless you have.

You'll be completely lost on what's going on.

Also, what was up with the ending of episode two? I didn't watch the next two yet.

"James is a cool guy. Always been cool" - Shelly. :chuckle:

I couldn't stop laughing over that. I always thought James was whiny and ball-less nerd, personally. And I can't recall Shelly and James ever sharing any dialogue about one another. But Shelly suddenly has always thought James was "cool"?

I think another Bobby and James collision is on the horizon.

I know what @Cratylus is talking about, and yes, I get the joke..

Michael Jordan == DeMar DeRozan...

I'm going to have to rewatch that again. Loved seeing all of the old characters. It's as if they didn't miss a beat. I forgot that Coop had a doppelgänger.

Do we know how many episodes we get this season?

I also laughed. Funny how I probably enjoyed James' appearance here more than I did anything he did in the original run.

I believe it's a run of 18 episodes.

So after watching those two episodes I rewatched the Season 2 finale...

In it, Laura Palmer says to Coop "see you in 25 years"

...Was it always planned to bring this show back 25 years later?

Lynch has hinted at it being a coincidence. Started throwing ideas around 4 years ago and it just happened to line up. Have to believe someone planted the side because of Laura's line, though. Worked out pretty perfectly.

Anyone catch parts 3 & 4 yet? Couple of awesome guest appearances.
