Twin Peaks

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
One of the mistakes ABC made in marketing Twin Peaks was presenting it as a straightforward murder mystery ("Who killed Laura Palmer?") when it was never meant to be that.

Yup. If it was up to Lynch, they never would have explicitely solved it.

Can someone explain to me WTF was going on with Coop in episodes 3 & 4?

Well, Rob, as Gordon Cole/David Lynch says "I have no idea what's going on."

Best I can explain it, Coop has been in the Black Lodge for the last 25 years. A place that is on the edge of a waking dream and terrible nightmares. 25 years, in there? Your brains would be scrambled. I think that is only part of it though...

The supernatural denizens of the show move through electricity. When Coop is squeezing through an electrical outlet, he was supposed to assume Doppelganger Coop's position, but the doppelganger was ready for it, so he made another person resembling Cooper (Dougie Jones). So, instead of being sucked back into the Black Lodge himself, Dougie Jones would be.

The real Dale was tricked into Dougie's position, and DoppelCoop had gunmen ready to take him out. I think because the process of getting back into the world was messed up, the real Coop's brain is somewhat fried, but his memories will return and he'll eventually get back to Twin Peaks. Maybe the coffee at the end of Episode 4 will help return him to good ol' Dale.

Also, apparently only one Cooper can exist on our plane of existence at a time, which may explain that after the DoppelCoop threw up his garmonbozia (creamed corn/pain & sorrow) he was acting so strangely (okay, stranger than normal) while being interviewed by Cole/Albert/Preston. That and the golden marble (essence/soul?) may have something to do with this.

Yeah, going back and reading all of that..uh...
... Man, I love this show. :p

It was basically the reason he abandon the show if I recollect. The ABC executives wanted it solved, Lynch didn't care for it to be necessarily. He was overruled, and was then like fuck this, I'm out.

Tell me about Northen Exposure.

A lot like TP as it is driven by characters who act oddly. The premise is a fancy Jewish NY doctor who is in a loan repayment program for Med School that requires him to serve four years in Alaska. He thought he was to practice in Anchorage or another larger city but is shipped to a small town full of eccentric people. It is part fish out of water, part literary exercise in the absurd and part sexual tension created by the two leads.

Couldn't have said it better.

Question is, how did Dark Dale create Dougie in the first place? He had the owl ring on too, but it couldn't protect him from being sent to the Lodge. I thought Laura couldn't be taken over because she put it on at the last minute in FWWM... and that's why Bob had to kill her. Maybe it only protects the wearer from possession, I don't know.

I think Coop's brain was fried from traveling through the electric sockets. I get it, but I can't handle too much more of that. That coffee better have kickstarted something.

How awesome was Wally Brando? That scene was too much. Felt like Cera was improv-ing, but Lynch is pretty well known for not allowing that.

Couple under the radar re-appearances: Ronette on the couch in ep 3 warning Coop about her "mother" behind the door. Jacques Renault tending the bar in ep 1... same actor but credited as Jean-Michel Renault. Hilarious.

Anyone figure out what any of the numbers mean yet?

How did he create Dougie? No clue, and that probably won't be explained. Maybe he molded him from garmonbozia or somethin'. The whole thing is weird, for sure. I believe the ring does protect from possession (which is why BOB killed her), but it also seems like it can be used as some sort of key or beacon into the Black Lodge/Red Room. Perhaps the ring is from MIKE or the Arm. In the Missing Pieces from FWWM, the ring is taken from Annie by an unseen nurse.

Wally Brando was great! That scene just kept going on and on, while Andy and Lucy keep their hands on his shoulder lovingly looking at him the entire time. Lynch's sense of humor is on point, but there are times where it lingers for awhile (example, Season 2, episode 1- the first 20 minutes, and what we're seeing with Mr. Jackpots) until your patience is tested.

I saw Ronette (credited as "American Girl") but I'm not sure if she's the same character. Was Josie's sister (briefly mentioned in the original series) the Eyeless Woman? Was the Eyeless Woman or the Mother "Judy" (mentioned by Phillip Jeffries in FWWM)? The other Renault brother is very interesting, is he Jacques's doppelganger?

I've seen some speculation on the numbers in the first scene (black+white) (from the welcometotwinpeaks forums):
430, Richard and Linda.
Richard and Linda Thompson made a song/album in 1977 (the number 7 is a commonly recurring number in Lynch's work) called SunnyVista.

Two birds, one stone.
Could that be referring to the Drake song of the same name released in 2016? Apparently Lynch himself is a fan of that song.

According to a reddit user, the sounds played on the gramophone are the sounds from the slot machine.

Not entirely sure about the rest, I would have to watch it again, which will happen soon. I think at this point in the story, speculation and context is all we have to go on, I feel as this journey continues, more answers (and questions) will be given. I'm happy to be along for the ride.

Found on Twitter. Should be noted that evil Coop's card was blue, but alas may be some sort of connection.

So we've gotten through 6... Spoilers if you're not caught up.

I think I've come to the realization that Dougie-Coop is going to last the entire season and we're going to have to make peace with it. I suppose it makes sense that after spending 25 years in the lodge and having his brain fried, he won't be able to make an immediate transition, despite the gradual Cooper cues (coffee, guns, "agent", the badge, etc...).

Love that we finally got to meet Diane (Most of us figured that was going to be Dern's role, but was exciting to get the reveal nonetheless).

Holy hell was that scene with Balthazar Getty drawn out. Just weird.

We're setting Becky up to be the next Laura, and I suppose I'm fine with that.

What did Hawk find in the bathroom door? Laura's missing diary pages??

That dwarf assassin? What the... and he's supposedly going after Dougie next.

I feel like the last couple of eps aren't as strong as the first couple, but I'm OK with it. Can't tell if it's just nostalgia or if there's more meat to it that I can't explain, but I'm still loving it so far. Can't wait for next Sunday.

Gotta light?

That might be the most riveting/bizarre hour of television I've ever seen. Where to even begin?

NIN basically had a music video 15 minutes in and it's barely worth mentioning.

That was full-on David Lynch at his most fucked up. I don't know what to make of it otherwise. Anyone who can make sense of that episode deserves some kind of prize.

Well, in a nut shell, the nuclear testing bomb, was the creation of BOB. Maybe even the creation of the Black Lodge itself?

The gotta light guy, I take it was also created from that, and is part of the black lodge.

Might explain in the earlier episodes, where BOB's presence was described as scorched engine oil.

The rest, I don't know, man... It's Lynch, it was one of the most fucked up, incredible, bizarre, and amazing visual experience I've ever had.

The Laura's face on that glowing ball, to me, was the biggest question mark. Was Laura created, too, when the Giant was???? WTF.

This is just me spit balling it. That the young girl, from the 50s, might be Laura Palmer's mother.

And that cockroach, that crawled inside her was actually BOB. But, BOB actually came inside Leland when he was a boy, so I'm not so sure about that.

Maybe the boy the girl kissed, is Leland though?

Also, Cooper is back, IMO.

I think the Cooper that woke up, is our good old Cooper. Remember, the doppleganger Cooper/Bob, was still out there, and Cooper couldn't completely come back as Cooper until Bob/Evil Dale returns. Now, he's gone, presumably back into the Black Lodge?

I think our good ole' Dale is back. I at least hope so. The Dougie shit was cute, but getting old, not sure how much more I can take of it. Although Janey-E, played by Noami Watts is killing it.

Yeah, I really think the young girl might be Sarah Palmer. Remember, Sarah KNEW Bob's face.

She was the one that described what Bob looked like on a sketch sheet to Sheriff Truman.

It was never explained, how, or why she was having these visions of Bob. If Bob was her first host... Then that explains some things.
