Well, Rob, as Gordon Cole/David Lynch says "I have no idea what's going on."
Best I can explain it, Coop has been in the Black Lodge for the last 25 years. A place that is on the edge of a waking dream and terrible nightmares. 25 years, in there? Your brains would be scrambled. I think that is only part of it though...
The supernatural denizens of the show move through electricity. When Coop is squeezing through an electrical outlet, he was supposed to assume Doppelganger Coop's position, but the doppelganger was ready for it, so he made
another person resembling Cooper (Dougie Jones). So, instead of being sucked back into the Black Lodge himself, Dougie Jones would be.
The real Dale was tricked into Dougie's position, and DoppelCoop had gunmen ready to take him out. I think because the process of getting back into the world was messed up, the real Coop's brain is somewhat fried, but his memories will return and he'll eventually get back to Twin Peaks. Maybe the coffee at the end of Episode 4 will help return him to good ol' Dale.
Also, apparently only one Cooper can exist on our plane of existence at a time, which may explain that after the DoppelCoop threw up his garmonbozia (creamed corn/pain & sorrow) he was acting so strangely (
okay, stranger than normal) while being interviewed by Cole/Albert/Preston. That and the golden marble (essence/soul?) may have something to do with this.
Yeah, going back and reading all of that..uh...
... Man, I love this show.
