Iman Shumpert: Gone! Thank God!

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
This is probably the wrong thread for this post, but I guess it can be moved if necessary...

Front office feels like Gilbert is in an all-out pissing contest with LeBron. If LeBron wants the Cavs to give up franchise pieces he should commit long-term. If LeBron doesn't commit long-term, Gilbert will continue to focus on long-term health while knowing, unless LeBron tanks next season, the Cavs can make the finals. At that point....who knows? Maybe we steal a title.

As it is today though, Gilbert is structuring all moves on long-term growth. He's already in "how do we surround Kyrie and Love" mode....

So Shumpert will be dealt soon...for short term, non guaranteed deals, and those will be then used in FA next year, or to be dealt for a guy with long-term player control.

And the parting of ways between Gilbert and Griffin should be obvious to all now even though I already stated it. Griffin was willing to move Love for a short-term contract and Gilbert nixed it....Griffin would not be tied to our current roster knowing we will likely lose...he wanted to make a deal that fixed our issues in a "short-term" lens. Gilbert wanted nothing to do with it if it meant LeBron and any incoming assets could leave before our "team controlled assets" could leave....

This actually makes sense on why Griff is gone. He said on a podcast (can't remember which one), that his mentality it to go all in and use up every asset available to win because you don't know when you have another chance as a GM. Ill side with Gilbert on this one, we need a more long term approach to this team with or without LeBron. We were going down the road to having no assets in the near future.

The best way to get LeBron to resign next year and Kyrie the year after is to have the assets to make moves. If we are left in cap hell and the only moves are the mini-mle and vets mininium players, we won't look too attractive to our Big 3.

I actually don't mind that strategy going forward and I will be watching and following regardless of whether LeBron is here or not.
Some people are so hung up on whether he is staying or leaving that it will diminish the enjoyment of the coming season.
If he is leaving I would love to trade him for a huge package to set us up going forward though I know that's not happening.

LeBron has a no-trade contract so he won't be dealt.

I do believe it's worth watching Lakers moves because it'd make a lot of sense to see LeBron work a sign and trade with LA next year. We already have Kyrie so I don't see a ton of value in Ball, but he'd likely be a moveable piece.

If LeBron ends up on Lakers, I think it's obvious CP3 signs, Wade comes aboard at a discount, PG13 signs a max deal, and then they find a defensive minded big.

To do a sign and trade to LA we'd need value back....so most likely shitty late round picks but potentially Ball, Clarkson, Randle, Zubac, etc....Lakers will need to clear space too.....so giving up some young guys will be necessary. Not unlike Cavs giving up Wiggins to secure Love....

If this is true then LeBron's in a problem of his own making. And in fact, if this is true, what's the point of letting this continue into the regular season? It's toxic and unnecessary.

What's the alternative?

I just find it unreasonable LeBron would want to remain here, especially considering his NBA finals record being at stake. Why not ask for a trade?

A trade to where, and in said trade, they have to give up assets?

LeBron isn't forcing his way to a team that then needs to give up assets....its counter-productive.

I could see LeBron saying he wants to close out his career in LA and then asking for space to be cleared so he can get a vet PG in Paul to come on board....so in that case the Cavs work a sign and trade....but LeBron isn't just going to tell the Cavs front office where he wants to go and then force a deal where that team pisses away assets. That's not how this will go down...

There's no team LeBron could get traded to or sign with next year via cap space that is going to have any better shot against the Warriors than the Cavs.

So "improving his Finals record" would not be one of the motivations for him to want to leave.

So how would this work? Lakers would set up the whole team first and add Lebron in the 2018 offseason? Lebron opts out of his 2019 Cavs contract and we set up the new contract for the trade?

If this were to happen I would want Ingram, Ball, and Clarkson.

Just like PG did. If Gilbert's playing the long-term game, it would make sense to trade LeBron [to wherever he demands/asks] and get what he can or watch LeBron walk for nothing.

Hey @billmac91 , cheers for the insight.

But I have a few major doubts.

I just don't buy that LeBron and CP3, the Vice President and the President of the Players Union, who constrcuted the super-max deal, ultimately end up never taking it. They all have to take a pay-cut of sorts to play together.

Also, If the entire plan was to re-unite the Banana Boat squad at Lakers, why did CP3 go to Houston on a sign and trade when he could have signed some sort of 1+1 year deal there? One of the main reasons he pushed for the sign and trade deal was so that Houston could have his bird rights and he is eligible for that super-max deal next summer.

I am not saying LeBron will never leave or anything. He may end up leaving. But, I just don't buy that it would be at Lakers.

IF he leaves, it would be to go to the teams which give him the best chance to win. And those would be Spurs and Philly imo. Spurs because him, Kawhi and Pop would scare the shit out of anyone and Phill have the talent and assets to contend.

As it stands today, there is no team for LeBron to go to that would make any kind of sense.

Now, can that change a year from now? Yeah. Do I think LeBron would leave to join a better team? For sure, especially if we continue to stand pat and do nothing and get rolled by the Warriors in 5 again.

But, for now, no such team exists. The Lakers aren't even close to being close. LeBron is not going to sacrifice the last few years of his elite play on a non-contender. The business ventures will be there even when he's retired.

The only team that makes sense for LeBron to leave Cavs for is Spurs, as of now.

I agree, but even they would need to do some tinkering. Starting with getting Aldridge off their books.

Parker's contract ends next summer. LMA can opt out next summer as well. But if he doesn't, they can move him because he would have 1 year left on his contrat.

Kawhi + LeBron + Green is already an excellent core.

In Mills, Murray, Simmons and Dedmon (Should they re-sign the two), there are good role-players already. They would still have the space to sign one more Free Agent along with LeBron.

And, trust Pop and Buford to find those role-players to thrive there.

Just checked again.

As of now, Spurs would have a payroll of nearly $35 Million next summer if LMA and Dany Green decide to opt out next summer.
