Here's my contribution to the mix:
https://basketball.realgm.com/tradechecker/saved_trade/6920847#
Cle gets: Melo, Dennis Smith, Jr., Dallas 2020 top 5 protected 1st, Miami 2023 2nd round pick
Dal gets: Kyrie Irving, Shump, Kay Felder
NYK gets: Josh McRoberts, Devin Harris, Dallas 2018 top 10 protected 1st
After this trade I would sign D Rose to the minimum and promise him the starting job, which would give Smith a year to learn the ropes and be a hopefully high level contributor off the bench without forcing him to perform consistently for a championship team. With Melo in the fold, TT moves to the bench with D Smith, Korver, and Jeff Green as you'll want as much shooting as possible in the starting lineup to allow Rose to penetrate. The picks help us restock the cupboard in case Bron leaves or to be used as trade bait to continue to build the team if he stays. We also clear out a roster spot allowing us to still have space for a possible Wade buyout come winter time.
Dallas finally gets the star they've consistently struck out on, and can surround him with as Harrison Barnes and Noel as they young core going forward (Noel should be a welcome sight behind Kyrie to cleanup when the matador defense strikes). With not much of the way in talent to offer they have to give up 2 firsts and eat a bit of salary, but that's getting off pretty easily for a top 25 player.
New York finally can move on from the Melo era, save 16 mil, get a vet pg to mentor their rook pg, and get a likely mid first pick all without adding anything to the books moving forward. In my mind, they should be tickle pink.
Here would be our depth chart:
PG D Rose/D Smith/Calderon
SG JR/Korver/Osman
SF LBJ/Green/RJ
PF Melo/Frye
C Love/TT/Tavares
Defense might be scary, but with a pissed off Bron and some motivated new vets back in a winning situation (Rose, Melo, Green) maybe they can play at a higher level on that end than we think?
