Potential Playoff Roster

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Is there anything more overly romanticized than Tomlin's performance in last year's playoffs?

He was solid, had a lot of luck go his way, and we limited his exposure to each lineup.

Still ended up with and ERA over 4.50, and a K/9 under 6.

I don't believe so. He was easily their second best starter in the playoffs, and was big against the Jays and Sox.
Not bad for a fringe guy that was forced into being a 2.

Like I said, he was solid. We only had 3 starters, and the 3rd was hurt for a series. Being 2nd out of 2 healthy starters isn't a huge accomplishment.

He had 3 solid performances, and there was a good amount of luck involved in those.

I'm very pleased with how he performed, but a lot of people talk about his outings like he's some playoff god.

The guy kept his cool for a series clincher against one of the most potent offenses in baseball in one of the most intimidating parks in baseball and held the best team in baseball scoreless in another of the most intimidating parks in baseball.

Calling it "luck" is cheap, the guy rose to the occasion twice on the game's biggest stage.

He got lit up in a potential clincher on the games real biggest stage.

So did Kluber. So did Miller. So what?

Not to the point Tomlin did.

Kluber and Miller at least gave the team a chance. The problem with Tomlin is he is too prone to not giving his team a chance by the occasional 5, 6, 7 ER in 3 or 4 innings start.

That's why, when the rotation is healthy, he will not start in the post season, and why his post season was just normal Tomlin, not some better iteration.

If you say so. I saw him do what he always does, throws strikes, and doesn't beat himself. He didn't appear to be working on a new level.

Like I said, I'm pleased with what he did. I'm just not buying the "proven playoff performer" label getting thrown around.

Smells a lot like grit, moxie, and proven winner when it comes to the sports lexicon.

Given that we lost Game 7 by 1 and both guys got clobbered by Fowler, I'd disagree with that.

Not saying that anybody should confuse Tomlin's prowess with that of Kluber or Miller but he did his job in the playoffs. Bauer was the one who fucked us.

I thought he was serviceable, but I'm not a huge fan of his stuff (is anyone?).

I'm fine with leaving him out of the postseason rotation if Bauer continues to pitch as he has.

No one fucked us. Bad luck fucked us.

Carrasco and Salazar and Brantley being injured wasn't Bauer's fault. And Bauer was healthy for the WS, last I looked.

Also, lets not compare Tomlin on normal rest to Kluber in game 7 on 2 days rest. Thats ridiculous. And last I looked, we took that game to extras, right? We had a shot to walk off the game for 2 innings. That's giving the team a chance, no?

Game 6 was over after the 2nd inning in Tomlins last start.

That's always Tomlins problem, and it always will be. He's a dying breed of pitcher who pitches to contact, and those guys are prone to getting lit up. That's what he is, was, will be, and was last year in the post season. No better, no worse, and he has always been a mediocre pitcher.

Tomlin won us a game in the World Series, Bauer didn't. Unconscionable to shovel dirt on the one when he did his part while the other fucked up what could have been a series victory in 5.

Lot of revisionist history going on with Bauer currently pitching well and Tomlin not. Until Bauer steps up on the biggest stage like Tomlin did he's not getting the benefit of the doubt from me.

Tomlin didn't "step up" though.

He was his normal self. That's not stepping up. That is the entire point being made in this argument between D-Wreck and yourself that I just jumped in on.

Revisionist is acting like Tomlin was better than normal in the playoffs. He wasn't.

If you're going to center an argument around stepping up on the biggest stage, you're talking to the wrong guy.

I don't buy into that kind of stuff.

Playoff numbers are a prime example of small sample size theater.

I'm not even sure Bauer is in the rotation even if he continues to pitch well. If the top 3 are healthy come post season time, I can see a 3 man rotation being used, under certain circumstances.

Pretty much just used a 3 man rotation last year, though that was out of desperation.

But I trust Kluber and Carrasco to be normal on 3 days rest instead of the normal 4, and we might need them to do that depending on how individual series play out.

With the day off between venues, say if they find themselves in a must win game following the off day, I wouldn't be surprised to see Kluber go on short rest.

Why would anyone be worried about history to make an argument for who should be pitching?

What Tomlin did last season doesn't matter now.
