Potential Playoff Roster

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Please explain the playoff situation where McAllister holds more value than Clevinger.

I mean, I'd rather have McAllister coming out of the pen than Clevinger in situations that are for 1 inning or less.

Z-Mac is one of the fan base's whipping boys, but he's actually been an excellent reliever.

If either guy is pitching in relief, the ballpark is clearing out and we turn our focus to the next game. If Clevinger is starting then I guess the stitches didn't hold.

If we're ahead, I don't see a single-inning situation where McAllister would be used.

If we're behind, I don't see a situation where Clevinger isn't better than McAllister.

This is all subject to change over the next 7 weeks obviously if guys get hot or go into extended slumps.

Lineup

C: Gomes
1B: Santana
2B: Kipnis
SS: Lindor
3B: Ramirez
LF: Brantley
CF: Chisenhall
RF: Bruce
DH: Encarnation

Going with Chisenhall over Zimmer in center right now with BZ in such a vicious slump. Zimmer would be a pinch runner and come in as a defensive sub as needed.

Bench
C: Perez, IF: Urshela, OF: Jackson, OF: Guyer, OF: Zimmer

Jackson and Guyer would both start against LHP, sliding Chisenhall and Bruce into pinch hit roles.

Rotation
SP: Kluber
SP: Carrasco
SP: Salazar
SP: Bauer

Straight forward. All four guys are in good to great form right now.

Bullpen
RP: Allen
RP: Miller
RP: Shaw
RP: Smith
RP: Clevinger
RP: Olson
RP: Otero

The first four guys are locks. Going with Clevinger over Tomlin as the long man. I know it's a small sample size, but as of now lefties are only hitting .133 against Olson. There's too much LOOGY value there to keep a RHP over him. McAllister and Goody have both been better than Otero this year, but I have a feeling Tito values Otero's ability to get a ground ball (62.3%) if the team desperately needs a double play.

Hitters left out
Almonte
Gonzalez

Pitchers left out
McAllister
Goody
Tomlin

Can some one explain where this Olson kid came from? Thank you in advance

How did we obtain him? Why so little major league experience?

Can't speak to much about the lack of ML experience but he bounced around the past couple of years and eventually was picked up off of waviers by the Indians last July, when Boone Logan went down he's the one that took his spot and he made the most of it so far.

A big part of Olson's success this year has been striking batters out. 18:33 BB/SO ratio in 2016. 13/64 BB/SO ratio in 2017.

Wasnt converted into a reliever until just before he debuted in the bigs and struggled in his first few cups of coffee. Being older and not having dominant stuff he got bounced off a couple rosters before landing here. In his short stint shoo far he has had good command, let's see if that continues. Probably getting better by being around a brilliant analytical mind like Trevor Bauer.

Bauer looks like the fourth starter and likely is.
I would give Tomlin a a few starts when he gets off the DL. If he gets in a groove as he did last season, I'd get him on the roster one way or another. He was fantastic last post season- those results shouldn't be ignored.

Is there anything more overly romanticized than Tomlin's performance in last year's playoffs?

He was solid, had a lot of luck go his way, and we limited his exposure to each lineup.

Still ended up with and ERA over 4.50, and a K/9 under 6.

First of I am not sure if I can trust Derek, but I could trust D-Wreck

Honestly though I would actually have Tomlin out of the pen for the playoffs and have Bauer starting. Bauer has overall better stuff, but Tomlin can eat a lot of innings fairly easily, so he is the perfect guy to have out of the pen in case we need a long reliever and he is always willing to do stuff like that as well. Hopefully we have a healthy rotation for the playoff so guys like Bauer, Clevinger and Tomlin do not need to be overused. I mean in a perfect world scenario for us, we would only see Bauer and Tomlin pitching once/twice the entire playoffs since they are our 4th/5th starters.

Well, the 4th guy is going to get used once/series unless we sweep the ALDS. There is no 5th starter though. Tomlin shouldn't see a start in the playoffs at all.
