Bias In Media

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Things you missed:

Gouris continued crusade against Breitbart.

More like, a crusade against racism and bigotry and abject stupidity.

Akronite calling me a racist without saying directly I’m a racist.

You are the guy that loves claiming someone called you a racist when they didn't. Akronite never called you a racist. You said I called you one, and I've never, in 8 years here, called you a racist.

Stop trying so hard, TyGuy...

Goury repping that post saying I’m a racist.

Post didn't call you a racist.

Goury explaining he doesn’t technically call people racist.

Yep. So stop lying and saying I've called you one when I haven't.

I talk to a somewhat sexist feminist every day. I don't need to resort to calling her a sexist to discuss why some of her positions are illogical.

I think that could illustrate a pretty big point. When you actually want to work through someones ideas, you don't need to call them something incendiary. You can just address what they're talking about and actually get somewhere rather than blowing everything up.

That's a fair point...

The problem here is that the accusation of racism is being done preemptively here.

As an example; @TyGuy is claiming that he's been called a racist, in an effort to derail from the question as to whether or not Steve Bannon and Breitbart are racist outlets.

So, while I agree with your point that calling someone a racist, in itself, isn't the best way to have a conversation, if that's the goal; I also put to you that pointing out racism isn't self-defeating in itself. It demonstrates irrational, emotional, and prejudiced thinking/positions.... Thus, by demonstrating racism, you demonstrate irrationality and bias; which, is the point of this thread, pointing out bias in media outlets.

In Breitbart's case, that bias is centered around an agenda of White Supremacy. That's comparable, perhaps, to your feminist friends views on sexism/feminism.

Sure and if they come out and say something illogical, that specific illogical idea could be addressed from a logical standpoint.

The irrationality can be exposed without calling it racist, sexist etc.

I really don't care if you or @gourimoko think i'm a racist, but do us all a favor and either keep that to yourselves, or be direct about it instead of beating around the bush.

Who said anything about you? I was making a joke about Huber.

Personally, I don't think any of the regular posters are racists in a strong sense. I think there is a disappointing trend of supporting racist policies, ignoring racism, and making racist statements from time to time. But racism is a spectrum. I don't think anyone on here is a Nazi or klansmen.

I'm sure I've found something you've posted to come off racist or have racist overtones. Have I been beating around the bush by not saying you're a racist because of a post online? Even when Caf posted a racist statement, and then defended it (predictably) with a statement about political correctness, I didn't call him racist, I called the post racist. I don't know you but my assumption with everybody by default is that they aren't a straight up hateful bigot. When I made the Salon joke, that was about how people don't acknowledge their racism, that's not the same as saying that the forum is populated by Nazis, to be clear.

"I've said something ban worthy and now I am back tracking to make up for it."

He asked who was racist and you responded by telling him to look at his likes for his answer. There really isn't any other way to spin that

Sure and if they come out and say something illogical, that specific illogical idea could be addressed from a logical standpoint.

It could be; sure, but, you could also argue a person loses a certain degree, if not all, of their credibility once being demonstrated to be a racist. Particularly as it relates to topics of racism.

....

Anecdotally, I had a physics professor who I found to be quite the sexist. At the time, I really didn't care as much about his sexism; it didn't bother me since I wasn't as liberal at the time, I was young, and I thought the man was brilliant (to be fair, he is, when it comes to physics).

On topics relating to his expertise, the topic wasn't an issue.... usually. However, his sexism did bleed into his everyday dealings with female students and faculty. Again, at the time, I didn't say much or do much and didn't think much of it. We all just accepted it as him being a .. somewhat sexually crass individual, but someone who was also generally harmless.

So while you can address these specific points; when it came to anything relating to women in general, this wouldn't be someone you could take seriously -- nor was it someone you could have a rational, thoughtful conversation with if it related to the opposite sex.

So again, his demonstrable bias made his opinion much less valuable than someone who hadn't previously expressed such strong prejudice towards women.

Disagree. Even though the girl I'm dating is sometimes sexist, not all of her positions about everything are discredited. Hell, even MOST of her points on men are thoroughly accurate.
