That it true and your comment I quoted wasn't disputing that either, to be fair.

I'm baffled by Kiddo's comment though.
I'm not arguing that Trump didn't attack the people either though. He did, it's obvious. I was responding to @kosis' comment saying that we're defending Trump to clarify. I don't condone his comments about the people. He shouldn't have called the countries shitholes either because it isn't a presidential thing to say, but I'm not really offended by it. Some places are shittier than others, but it's just something normal people don't really come out and say.

Gotta love that we’re now justifying tactless behavior, hateful rhetoric, and racism because, party.

Obama would be hanging from a cross by now in Fox News HQ.

....as Campaign Chairman and CHIEF Strategist.

:chuckle:

Good luck with this, bud. I'm out.

In Trump's mind, everyone plays minor roles....

To clarify, my last post was trying to say that I see what you're saying and it wasn't fair for me to lump your comments with Kiddo, even though we aren't entirely in agreement.

Obama did all of that and we weren't allowed to talk about it.

I've always felt like you are one of the more reasonable posters in terms of willing to see points the other side makes. It's one of the reasons that I enjoy reading your posts even though I tend to come at things from an opposite perspective.
Thank you. I like hearing other people's perspectives too, even though I don't always agree. I like this place because I think it's important to avoid putting myself in an echo chamber. Can't challenge my beliefs if I'm only surrounded by people who share them.

The President should never say something like that where people can overhear him and report it.

But Haiti and much of Africa are shitholes.

Do you want to live in the shithole that is Haiti?

Neither do a lot of Haitians.

Part of the problem is that people from countries that aren't shitholes are more likely to want to stay there. We have a lot of people wanting to come here from shithole countries because...they're shitholes.

:cha (40):

Isn't it crazy how different people's beliefs are? I love the stuff you post about in the sports forums but dang we couldn't be more different in our political views. It's honestly kind of sad.

It's kind of crazy but I've noticed that some of the posters on this forum whose opinions I respect the most in terms of basketball, I tend to have polar opposite views with politically. And some of the posters I almost always disagree with in terms of basketball, I tend to align with more politically. I have no idea how or why that is the case...but I've found that to be interesting.

If the rate had went up during Trump's first year in office would you blame him or Obama?

I'd guess that most economic trends are reactionary to policy, so I'd say an upward trend in 2017 would trace back to what happened in 2015-16 as opposed to what was currently happening in the current year.

If it levels off in the next year or two, I'd say that it was because that is a realistic level of unemployment. I'd think that below 3.5% isn't very realistic for anyone. If it went up in 2018, then the current policies would be gaining more responsibility.

US did make a lot of holes in those countries that are presently full of shit.

Truthfully, to the extent there are "holes" in those countries, they were generally made by the Brits and (especially) the French. The Brits generally had the decency to establish laws, and educated locals to help run those places. The French just exploited the shit out of them. Former French colonies generally are further behind former British colonies because of that.

We get some of the blame for Central America.

Yea which is why like @MediumBaller I didn't have a problem with that comment per se. But there are two factors that elevate it to the realm of being problematic. It wasn't just your drunk uncle at Thanksgiving saying it, it was the president of the United States. The comments of the president, even if they may have a kernel of truth to them, have real foreign policy implications. And to couple that with asking why more Norweigans couldn't come instead actually disgusts me. Because that is tantamount to saying that he prefers people of a certain race over others to immigrate here.

I agree with all of that except the bolded. The reality is that Norway isn't a shithole -- it is an advanced western democracy with educated people. And I imagine the reason he mentioned Norway specifically is that he'd just met with the PM of Norway. The average Norwegian is far more likely to be educated and attuned to western culture/values than is the average person from sub-Saharan Africa.

And here's an awkward truth -- for a variety of historical/geographic reasons, Europe (populated historical by white people) is more advanced technologically, socially, and politically than is sub-Saharan Africa. That's why we see so much emigration from Africa, but very little immigration to Africa.

Of course, one thing of which Trump probably wasn't aware was we do tend to get the cream of the crop in terms of immigrants from many African countries. Nigeria, for example. But some others, much less so.

The bottom line here is that the President of the United States shouldn't be making comments like that at all. It's a bad look for him, the office, and our country.

Whether or not these countries are, in fact, shitholes is irrelevant. It's not the President's place to call them that, and defending his comments is ridiculous. Further, it was obvious that there was a racial implication to Trump's comments. He literally complained that we keep getting people from the shithole comments (and he was talking about majority black countries here) instead of nice countries like Norway (which is majority white). The implication couldn't be more obvious, despite the constant need from some to pretend otherwise.
