Truthfully, to the extent there are "holes" in those countries, they were generally made by the Brits and (especially) the French. The Brits generally had the decency to establish laws, and educated locals to help run those places. The French just exploited the shit out of them. Former French colonies generally are further behind former British colonies because of that.

We get some of the blame for Central America.

Are you trying to argue that he isn't racist or that he isn't more racist than everyday people? Because it's a spectrum and he's further down than most people I'd say (or hope).

The bottom line here is that the President of the United States shouldn't be making comments like that at all. It's a bad look for him, the office, and our country.

Whether or not these countries are, in fact, shitholes is irrelevant. It's not the President's place to call them that, and defending his comments is ridiculous. Further, it was obvious that there was a racial implication to Trump's comments. He literally complained that we keep getting people from the shithole comments (and he was talking about majority black countries here) instead of nice countries like Norway (which is majority white). The implication couldn't be more obvious, despite the constant need from some to pretend otherwise.

I'm relieved. I thought he committed a crime by saying what he did. He made a crude remark that is 100% true.

So I'm not sure how you can possibly know that he was referring to race rather than those other, perfectly legitimate criteria.

I don't think he implied that it was race that mattered -- that's just an inference that some people chose to draw.

Beyond that, the education level of a country is based largely on circumstance, and nothing that your average citizen from that country can control. It's not fair to punish people for having the gall to be born in poorer countries and only admit people from wealthy countries. That's basically tantamount to barring the immigration of certain races while allowing the immigration of others, which is obviously what Trump was getting at when he made those comments.

Further, people from countries like Norway have less reason to want to move to our country to begin with, as they don't lack opportunity where they are already, whereas people from poorer countries come here seeking freedom and opportunity that they may not have in their homeland.

I'd be curious if he's gone a single day since becoming President without telling at least one lie, either via a tweet, comment, or in a speech. I definitely wouldn't bet against it.

I agree with all of that except the bolded. The reality is that Norway isn't a shithole -- it is an advanced western democracy with educated people. And I imagine the reason he mentioned Norway specifically is that he'd just met with the PM of Norway. The average Norwegian is far more likely to be educated and attuned to western culture/values than is the average person from sub-Saharan Africa.

And here's an awkward truth -- for a variety of historical/geographic reasons, Europe (populated historical by white people) is more advanced technologically, socially, and politically than is sub-Saharan Africa. That's why we see so much emigration from Africa, but very little immigration to Africa.

Of course, one thing of which Trump probably wasn't aware was we do tend to get the cream of the crop in terms of immigrants from many African countries. Nigeria, for example. But some others, much less so.

I'm a little confused by your post. Are you saying that it's ok to prefer Norweigans to Africans/Haitians because they are more educated and more advanced? Or are you saying that Trump didn't mean to prefer Norweigans and is being misunderstood? Or are you saying both of the above? Or something else entirely that I'm missing?
