Something occurred to me this morning and I have yet to see anyone make the most obvious player comparison for this kid. I've seen exhaustive comparisons of Sexton to Westbrook... I've seen him called a poor man's AI, and compared to a variety of guards in ways that just don't fit.

Why hasn't anyone brought up the obvious similarities Sexton has to Victor Oladipo?

VO is a little taller and longer than Sexton. I think Sexton might be a little faster/quicker. VO came out of a more disciplined college system and Sexton was required to freelance in a more undisciplined system with a lesser surrounding cast. But other than those differences I think there's a LOT of similarities in their games.

Both guys seem to get to the rim at will. Both guys have a bulldog mentality. Both guys are explosive and beat defenders with speed and a quick first step.

You said this was Lue's pick but when I think about how Gilbert whiffed on VO when he could have made the executive decision to over-rule Grant/Griffin's choice of Anthony Bennett? I'd bet anything that Gilbert sees a lot of VO in Sexton, so he was hell bent on scratching that itch that lingered since 2013 when the Cavs blew that pick on Bennett. Especially after watching VO shred our defense in the first round this year.

I think this kid could be a slightly shorter, slightly quicker version of VO and that would be a pretty good ceiling.

I can get behind the comparison because I like Oladipo lol.

Don't downplay the size differences though. Oladipo is legit 6'3.25 without shoes, has 6'9 wingspan and 8'4.5 standing reach. Sexton is 6'0.5 without shoes, 6'7.25 wingspan and 8'2.5 standing reach.(His reach was 8.0.5 a year ago which is interesting)

He also played bigger everywhere. On the boards, at the rim and on defense.

Oladipo was a worse shooter than Sexton. So we can absolutely be hopeful in that respect.

What Oladipo showed us in the playoffs and in the RS us that penetrating combo guards that can shoot off the dribble can absolutely be lethal and cause havoc. So I really like that part of the comparison.

I just can't believe we passed on such a talent in Oladipo for fucking Bennett. I can't comprehend that. Oladipo was such a ridiculous player as a junior.

We can play revisionist history of the Chris Grant era all day, but the Cavs found themselves in a position where Irving and Dion already had so many overlapping skills they hated each other. So much of that, looking back, were about their ability to be good teammates and inability to work in a system. Then here comes Oladipo, who could have been a Dion clone if he didn't have a better head on his shoulders. The best move was to cut bait on Dion and trade him for a veteran forward, then draft Oladipo. Or just draft the Greek Freak, who we heard the scouts loved. Oh well, this is the rabbit hole that ends in a bottle of cheap booze by lunch. No thank you.

keep this kid...whethere LBJ stays or not this organization needs to develop and play these young guys...its the only way we are going to be able to improve...Cavs have and will never get prime free agents...just wont happen...Cedi...Zizic and Sexton better get alot of minutes next season...Hill... JR not so much

Leonard and Lebron would be competitive with GS. Would you seriously rather win 30 games and get another mid-lottery pick or take Golden State to 6 or 7 even if we lose?
Yes 2 on 5. Durant clay c

Agree 100%. Cedi. Zizic Sexton. Nance. And I will say hood and Clarkson is much better basecto start at than what we had first time Lebron left
A sign and trade on Lebron. Moving love. Moving korver and JR and using the exception wisely would bring us some young talent and picks

Do you see similarities with Oladipo? what's your closest comparison?

Eric Bledsoe. Dipo was an athletic freak. Sexton doesn’t appear to be on that level.

Yeah, I know.

Oladipo was ridiculous. It was a comparison that buzz dog had made.

Though, I don't love the Eric Bledsoe comparison much.

Here's how Sexton's scoring volume (points per 100 possessions) and efficiency (TS%) stack up against other freshman guards/wings picked in the lottery (2017 and 2018):

Clearly he's an absolutely elite pure scorer prospect, and his case only gets stronger when you factor in his AAU achievements (set the single-season scoring record in 2017). I have very serious concerns about some parts of his game...but I have no doubt that, given the opportunity, he'll easily average around 20 points per game this season on solid efficiency.

How good is Young then? an absolute generational talent?

Not quite generational, but if offense was the only thing that mattered, I think he'd be good enough to go #1 in most drafts. Much more complete offensive prospect than Sexton thanks to his point guard potential.

I'm just confused. Does this mean Lebron has told them he's leaving? Sexton would need the ball in his hand to thrive. He's not going to develop while Lebron is here. If there was a chance Lebron was staying wouldn't they use this pick for someone like Mikal Bridges, who has some NBA ready skills?

So is this a sign of imminent rebuild? He's a nice player but not good enough to be the center of a rebuild. In that case why not take a flier on MPJ? Granted the health news on MPJ appears to be worse than anyone thought previous to draft night.

There just doesn't seem to be a plan. Admittedly, that doesn't mean there isn't one. There's a lot we don't know.
I am happy with Sexton but also wanted Bridges ... Wonder if we tried a #8 plus salary for Jordan 12 and 13

Obviously this could just be coach speak, but one of Sexton's assistant coaches mentioned that he's a much better passer than he gets credit for, largely because Alabama didn't really ask him to be a passer. His job was to score. Plus, it seems like his teammates were hot garbage.

Again, Hyphen at the time, Dipo and the Greek Freak would likely have bumped us out of the lottery, while also not being good enough (look at Giannis' rookie stats) to have the trade value to offset not getting the #1 pick, to get Love and entice Bron to come back.

Of course, you're right that you can play the hindsight game all day; personally, I would never have released Dell Curry to the expansion draft; that way, Steph would grow up wanting to play with LeBron (and also never meet Rigged Ayesha.) :)
