Baker Mayfield: Fire The Cannons

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Tyrod Taylor instead of Deshawn Kizer has to be worth at least 6 wins all by itself. Add Jarvis Landry and keep some of our other guys healthy that missed significant games last season and that is a big improvement. Add talent and depth to the defensive secondary. Add a new established OC instead of Hue calling the plays.

Those things aren't significant improvements?

It should be added that using pythagorean wins -- how many games the Browns should have won based on their performance -- they should have won 3-4 games.

The team was not as bad as their record (though still bad) and have improved significantly, especially in terms of the passing game (and arguably the running game as well with Hyde/Chubb v. Crowell.)

And the secondary... EJ Gaines and TJ Carrie ranked in PFF's and Football Outsiders top-25 corners last year, I think Ward will be ready on day one to make an impact, and Randall is alright and lets us move Peppers to his true position.

That secondary will help our blitz game significantly. I think our defense will be improved.

I know I sound way too optimistic, but, I am predicting 7-9 wins. The only real hiccup is Hue Jackson, and I really think that's why we did not win games we should have one last year.

I really think Tyrod Taylor alone will make a major difference. Not just in terms of his actual performance, but in terms of helping the entire team believe it has a chance to win. If we didn't have Hue...I'd go 9-7. Still think you're right on 7-9.

Putting aside the "the Browns always suck" bass, this team actually is above-average in terms of talent.

It's the most talented roster since 2007... Think about how crazy that is? I am just excited for us to play competitive football again.

I might have over-stated it a bit saying Tyrod versus Kizer is worth 6 wins, but not by much. I'm sure Moz could give us all a detailed breakdown of just how many times Kizer snatched defeat from the jaws of victory unless he bleached these painful moments from his brain. I know I was sitting there hoping Kizer would somehow come through every time, only to be disappointed every.single.time.

I'm hoping Haley will be the antidote to Hue. It will remain to be seen what damage Hue can do in his new role. Hopefully Haley is strong enough and autonomous enough to succeed with a proven QB like Tyrod. And on the defensive side, I'm hoping we added enough talent in the secondary to cover for the schemes of Greg Williams and our stud talent up front stays healthy. If so our defense could be pretty good.

You didn't exaggerate by much, according to this video where they talk about the W.A.R. of just swapping out QB's alone. It's worth a 4.9 wins improvement, just by removing Kizer and adding Tyrod. That doesn't account for any other improvements at RB, WR, DB, LB. Predicting 7-9\8-8 for this team is not at all outlandish.

Just think about all of the red zone turnovers alone. Taylor is the complete opposite in terms of taking care of the ball. The team is getting at least FGs from al of those trips. Not sure if the difference can be quantified, but the lack of drive-killing INTs will be such a big difference this year.

The expectations for Tyrod Taylor need to be dramatically cut down, IMO.

Independent of my own thoughts on Mayfield, Taylor has historically been pretty underwhelming. I realize that he may be able to suffice as "better than what the Browns have had" moniker people like to toss around, but that doesn't make him good.

Couple that with this team's complete inability to get the best out of players, and I don't really see the level of excitement others do, even if this team is obviously more talented.

I'm more encouraged that Mayfield is showing up bigtime in Berea. People there can clearly see he has a much stronger and more accurate arm.

But he is still adjusting. So Tyrod should continue to play until Mayfield is ready. Preferably, Tyrod should play until Hue is fired but ...we'll see. The Haslam family really is in love with that dude.

Everything I've heard is super encouraging.

This year seems ultimately irrelevant with Hue Jackson hanging on to coaching life by a hangnail.

I don't watch Football, but watching this Cowherd-Mayfield interview you come away very impressed from what's between the ears.

Are you not putting any weight on Haley as OC with play calling duties? I think that's a mistake, and you will RUE THE DAY.

Maybe he will make me regret it.

He's a coach with a litany of questionable, crucial mistakes and a personal life that has alot wrong with it.

Historically, betting on those guys isn't the best choice.

But we'll see.
