JR Smith

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
JR can be good on a contender in the right situation. He's got the physical tools to be a Bruce Bowen type guy, no doubt, and every contender out there could use another 3&D guy. But whoever wants JR has to meet 3 criteria:

1) Must have a solid locker room
2) Have a $12Mil-$20 mil contract that is less valuable on the floor than JR
3) They can't ever find themselves in a tie game in the NBA finals with three seconds left ....

Houston might want to trade Ryan Anderson. He really fell out of their rotations in the playoffs last season and when he did play, he had bad +/- numbers. Trading Anderson would give Houston more breathing space under the luxury tax and more salary flexibility next year too.

I just don't know what the Cavs would do with Ryan Anderson if they already got Love and Frye. Seems like there would have to be a sweetener for the Cavs or maybe the Cavs are willing to hold Anderson for a while just to clear JR out of the locker room.

I would rather trade TT and instead use JR's expiring to trade him next off-season for assets. He will be able to net some good shit. 2020 FA is no joke, and teams will need to clear up cap sapce.

Maximizing our assets is definitely top of the list of priorities, but I also wonder about the negative effects of JR with a poor attitude being on the team. How that could impact team play, the development of better coaching/player interactions, etc.

It all depends on which JR shows up to training camp, I guess.

The only young players they have are Zhou Qi, Isiah Hartenstein, Onauku. None of them are more valuable then a first round pick. And none are worth eating Andersons contract for.

in that case I would walk. the draft choice would not be high. Want to clear out dead salary, not add to it

JR would have more value to me at the deadline. Some contender will need a shoot off the bench. If JR has moderate success in the first half of the year then we could get more for him at the deadline

That is why I am not so worried about the atlanta pick.
We have three guys, all viable vets in Hill, JR and Korver with good contracts that some contenders will want.
We will have picks

Id do Anderson and a 1st for jr in a second. Cap space is overrated for us.
Tack on $6 mil in salary this year + $17 mil in salary next year for a #25 pick is incredibly dumb. The Baron Davis deal in 2011 was because the Clippers were bad & willing to send an unprotected pick. This scenario is what will hurt us for the long run.

JR will have value at the deadline. As will Hill & Korver. We will be competitive & neither Hill or JR will have anything to do with that.

Houston needs to stop pumping out fake news. Every year..."Houston in talks to acquire superstar A", "Trading Anderson", "Drafted a real keeper in player X".

All complete bull shit by Morey.

I don't think it's dumb. As long as we're not over the salary cap, it'd be worth it to have another 1st round pick. We have to spend our salary somewhere.

I hope we find a better deal for JR, but that deal isn't awful.

Not entirely true. They drafted De'Anthony Melton, SG from USC in the 2nd round this year; Melton looked pretty good in the Summer League. Some compare him to an Avery Bradley type. Was kicked off USC though, so may have some issues of his own.

They also bought Vincent Edwards from Purdue from this draft. 4 year player.

In regards to shipping off Anderson for JR, not only do I not like it, but i wonder how we make a trade like that work with our current players? JR+Okaro=$16,264,951....not enough to take back Anderson. We currently don't have any other players we could include...

I'm more wondering if the Rockets can gather up enough non-guaranteed salary to just take JR off our hands. Perhaps they can sign Richard Jefferson, include Nene, add in Melton, Edwards, and a Kendrick Perkins type non-guaranteed 1 yr deal?

I've got a set of tires for 'em...

I don't want JR on this team this season.
He imploded big time this year and the way he fouls and then questions whether he actually touched anyone is silly anymore.
