JR Smith

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
HYPOTHETICAL QUESTION:

IF you had to choose between JR and TT, and you HAD to keep one and get rid of the other one...who do you choose?

Given that it's a contract year for JR, I think there's a CHANCE that he stays engaged and plays within himself. Maybe Ty can reign him in and get something out of him as our backup SF?

I would choose JR over TT all day long. Although, I'd prefer that we get rid of both somehow. But if I have to keep one, I'd keep JR.

That's easy; you get rid of Tristan Thompson.

JR Smith can waived for less than $1.5M next season over 3 seasons; and on a 50% buyout that turns into only $750k in cap holds. Thompson's contract is going to be an enormous $18.5M expense that will be hard to move next season. Clarkson will likely be the same at $13.5M if he doesn't improve.

Here's to hoping both show massive improvement this upcoming season.

I should have clarified, but it was more of an "on the court" question. Aside from money and salary considerations.

However, those are great points as well.

On the court? You get rid of Smith... Thompson is still young, durable and provides substantial positive production. Smith is near retiring from the league.

I think I'm overly negative about TT because I had to watch Lue play him over Frye last season, when Frye and our bench were (for the beginning of the season) playing so well.

Also, we have plenty of bigs, but only 1 real SF with Cedi. Hood can't defend anyone, and well...I guess JR can't anymore either. But if he gave effort on defense, JR could at least be a serviceable backup SF until we find a better option.

Hopefully both JR and TT return to form and both become positive contributors.

uh no. Thompson is not durable. His athleticism is already dimished

Smith is the only current Cav I really hope is somehow gotten rid of, traded or even bought out. I just read the Wikipedia on Smith. At the bottom is a section "Controversies" after reading that I'm sure the team is better off without him.

Am guessing many fans didn't really know of his tendencies before joining. The biggest one being a contract year scam artist

I would like to party with JR :D Must be insane.

Edit. After reading controversies, I'm taking it back.

This could be a case to take on a Bazemore or Courtney Lee. We know our books won’t be clear of the dead weight for 2 more years, so perhaps the additional year shouldn’t make us shy away? I lean towards Lee, as I see the Knicks having more incentive to clear space for next summer’s FA. Can we snag back a 2nd with JR? Perhaps Mitchell Robinson?

JR has a troubled past but I don't think he's a bad person at heart. If people want him off the team so that Lue isn't tempted to play him 30+ a night I get that, but I wouldn't worry about him being a bad locker room presence.

They’ll play this season out with an eye on clearing significant cap space over the next two seasons.
I’m bullish on TT this year- I actually think he’s going to have a pretty good year. He’s coming into a contract year and needs two solid years behind him before he hits the market as a possible double double guy who can switch on D.
Jr? He’s done IMO. Best case scenario is he averages double figures going into the break (10 pts- I’m not optimistic lol) and they can move him for a second rounder (even if it’s protected).
But like you said, after this year he’s not an issue.

To avoid the locker room cancer aspect can we simply by him out The expiring is worth nothin unless we take back someone on a two year. Bucks for delly and a pick ? Is that possible. I would take two years of delly

If the Bucks toss in D.J. Wilson, the trade works:

Not sure the Bucks would be willing to do that, though. That also would create a bit of a logjam here unless we unloaded Hill or Clarkson.
