Cavs coaching search

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Larry Drew is a proven capable Head coach.

There is no reason he shouldn't expect a coaches salary if he is expected to be head coach of the team for the rest of the season.

Drew got Screwed over in Milwaukee by new owners and in the last 4 year he has seen first hand What kinf od owner he would be working for.

furthermore Lue was given a head coaches salary as an assistant and Cavs at one point had three former head coaches on salary.

it would be ultimately silly for Drew not to restructure his contract as accepting the interim coach position would essentially be ensuring that he ha no job at the end of the season.

Larry Drew is an established coach with quite the pedigree and can get a Job almost anywhere he wants as an assistant.

Drew is also going into a situation where his predecessor was fired for defying the front office who took it upon themselves to have player meetings about play time without the prior Head Coach.

this isn't an interim coach taking over at mid season. this is someone being asked to coach the majority of the season.

Edit. Larry made 1.6 million as the ehad coach for the Hawks where the team went to the playoffs each of his three seasons there and 2 million a season to head coach the bucks.

There is no reason he would take less money to coach the Cavs.

Larry Drew for the team to play better tonight but I think he is still showing loyalty to TT and he rode Clarkson while he was playing poorly. Sexton didn't end up getting more minutes. Zizic still isn't playing.

I'd much rather see someone outside come in and have some fresh eyes to this roster.
Loyalty is starting the best Center on the team?
Tristan was unleashed and not burdened with switching out every other play and he responded with 13 rebounds as part of his double double along with 3 assist and 4 steals.
Clarkson shot 60% inside the three point line and Scored 15 points off the bench with only one turnover.

Clarkson was also the only player off the bench to finish with a positive on court differential.

“Drew, who is one of the league's highest paid assistants at nearly $1 million this season, is seeking an adjustment to his contract that would guarantee him additional money in return for assuming the interim job. His deal is up in July.“

Windhorst reported that assistants who get promoted to interim during a season get a pro-rated pay boost that makes them equivalent to what a lower tier head coach makes. Usually around $2.5/$3M per year. The Cavs offered that to Drew.

Apparently, that's not enough, and he is demanding that the Cavs actually give him a contract for next year as head coach as well. So far, the Cavs have said no.

Yet again, the Cavs FO makes the right decision, and fans misinterpret the situation with incomplete information.

I agree with your point that Drew should get a pay bump.

Did you watch the game though? Clarkson looked terrible for most of the game, Larry Drew rode him and he got hot like everyone on the floor at the end of the game. He had a stretch with the bench where he was a ball hog and looked like he was going to kill the lead by himself. TT didn't look like anything special out there today. Len had is way with him for most of the game.

If the Cavs can't find anyone else. I think the best they should offer is 3 million this year and an added year where he gets only a million guaranteed so if he is let go he get a million for being a good soldier.

I initially saw the report about an extension past this season but based on the Windy/Woj report that doesn’t sound like the hang up. At least not anymore.

Where has the Cavs offer of $2.5-3 million been reported? I haven’t seen anything beyond context as to how this situation usually plays out.

Either way, Drew is negotiating from a position of relative strength given the team announced him as interim coach without seemingly agreeing to terms first. From the rest of that article, the locker room sounds like a mess and the front office seems indicisive about a plan/direction.

Haha this guy won the game against the team Lue got blown out of by 22 points.

Mr Drew we begrudgingly give you 2-3M dollars.

It's honestly crazy. He had them run various coverages and we found that the switching was one of the least effective. Somehow tho it wasn't just a mismatch looking contest for the other team!

He just manages the game so much better took timeouts when they gave up easy buckets. Got guys out when they were getting tired. Ran some plays from the bench.

I can believe it if you told me that Lue is a brilliant tactician and all that. I bet he is. I bet that has a lot to do with his ability to improve over a series. No way can he manage a game like Larry Drew tho. It wasn't anything special, but it showed how bad Lue is at that.

It definitely showed how bad Lue was. I don't think Larry Drew is anything special. I actually think they are willing to give him a pay bump this year (someone else said Windy said as such) but I fully understand why they don't want to give him a extra year on his contract.

You don't want the front office to be handcuffed going into next season to find a coach. Adding another coaches salary to the books is just another reason to let Larry Drew stay.

Really if the front office can find someone they think is more long term, they should do it. Larry Drew wasn't a candidate to be a HC of a team this year and is just lucky to be in this position. At best the front office should just offer a pay bump this year and a very small guaranteed amount for next year like a small thank you for being a good soldier.

Agree, the two games for comparison, or even the 7 total games this season, are small sample sizes to conclude much about Drew supposedly being this much superior to Lue, and each game has its own variance. ATL was at a back-to-back disadvantage tonight, and I think the Cavs just unraveled in the first ATL game in a way which wasn't a repeatable event; the team had checked out on Lue.

I liked Drew's game management better since last year. I was hoping Lue didn't come back from his absence.

Hood got hot, for all I know that never happens again.

Still I know he did better than Lue because I wasnt screaming "call a timeout you idiot!" Like every game I saw Lue coach.

Larry Drew is not the long term answer and anyone with a brain knows that. We're clearly about to enter a rebuild so to give Drew MORE guaranteed money over MORE guaranteed years would be insanely stupid.

It sounds like to me that many coaches see Dan spend tons of money elsewhere and then try to get him to overpay for their coaching services. Sadly enough, it's worked magically for Mike Brown and Ty Lue. Now, because we've set that precedent, Drew is simply trying to get his piece of the pie.
