2019 Browns Off Season/Roster Discussion

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Moreover, let's look at the big picture here. The Browns do not have a ton of cap space left. Sure, they have the money because of rollover, but I believe in actual cap, they don't have much left, and after draft picks are done, they will barely have any cap left.

You cannot roll out all stars at every position. This is about team building, management, and maximizing positions. Is Burnett or Murray every going to be a pro bowler in Cleveland? I highly doubt it. Are they NFL caliber, decent guys who won't be a huge problem to fill in for the Browns? Yes.

The hole that was created by moving Peppers, for that OBJ guy, has been filled by NFL quality. Will either guy ever be as good as Peppers? No. But, these guys have been proven to be better players than Kindred, and I think almost everyone here would agree that if I could offer two decent replacements for Zeitler and Peppers and in exchange for losing those two, you get one of the best WR'ers in the NFL, most would make that exchange.

This is where that tier list of Dorsey's comes into play. It's a lot easier to find a decent guard and decent safety to replace your very good guard and safety. More importantly, Murray and Burnett, while probably being the weak link in the secondary, aren't prohibitive to the rest of the team. Can you still win with them at Safety? Absolutely, as proven by the previous teams they were on and started for them.

Would I have preferred Tre Boston? Yes, I have loved that dude since his draft year. But this isn't a perfect world, the Browns only have ~5 million in real cap space, and that isn't going to change any time soon with Schobert and Randall becoming UFA's soon. This is where you find your cheap vets and draft picks to plug holes so that your stars an stay and get big contracts.

I like the signing.

Does that mean I think we should ignore the safety position in the draft? No.

Does that mean Dorsey will ignore it? No.

If anyone is expecting big money to be spent on any position from here on out then they'll likely be disappointed. We're probably gonna infuse the rest of our roster with young guys and plug up holes with cheap vets that still may be able to contribute.

I wonder if part of the new defensive strategy is to use the safeties more in the run defense? Both Murray and Burnett are primarily run stoppers who can play in coverage. Our linebackers are, well, not great, and there are not many guys available to help there.

It wouldn't surprise me if the Browns three linebackers and two safeties are fairly indistinguishable not he field. I guess we'll see.

Burnett is a good depth signing... I'm not sure he is a starter, mainly because his coverage skills are on the decline, but the guy can still play the run.

It's a sub-package league, but even in running and goal-to-go situations last year, Wilks would commonly stick to his 4-2-5.

Burnett may see a lot of time on the field, specifically to help in the run game.

Is anyone complaining about this signing? :conf (5):

He is a return specialist, I'll be interested if a return specialist is still worth a roster spot in this day and age.

Not sure what he has left in the tank but worth a shot.

Couple nice moves to replace Peppers.
